My pending purchase

I am trying to make up my mind and am leaning towards the single core because i am not certain the X2 is worth the extra $100+. I need to stay with AGP because i have no intention of buying a new video card. Help me decide!

I'll be leaping from what is in my sig below; primary consideration is gaming. Can't seem to get a clear indication on whether gaming will benefit from the two cores; people with experience or links to direct comparison articles appreciated.

Man, you are not going to want to hear this...
You aren't really upgrading all that much, if at all.
No, P4s don't do as well in games.
A 3.5GHz P4 is still a beast though.

Now, if you insist on switching now & are looking for pure gaming performance, go with the 3700+ SD.
For everything else, i'd recommend the X2 3800+

I honestly don't think your switch is worth it though.

I agree. The 3700+ is great for games but running a P4 @ 3.5 you prob wont see THAT big of a difference in games. Probably better to get antoher gig of memory insted.

I appreciate both those comments; but two factors i am counting on:

1) Wife needs an upgrade
2) I will be able to gain a decent if not great o/c at lower temps than my P4. though i do have a good o/c on the Northwood, it can get really hot in there!

I had a 3500+ for about two months on loan and i was impressed by it's in-game speed over my P4. Hopefully a 3700+ will destroy it further.

3700+ SD it is then, though really, an X2 would likely give you a much smoother alt-tabbing experience 😉

get single core, trust me. You can give up that extra 1.2 seconds alt-tabbing for 20 more fps + much more overclocking potential

It seems you guys have broken sarcasm meters

Also, there's a lot of OCing potential with X2s as well.

Plus, overall system smoothness > a few extra fps IMO.

Tough call indeed.

I mentioned in my PM that the single core might be your better route for a full gaming machine. I'd still stand by that pretty well, sorry n7 🙂 If you think you'll ever use your machine for anything other than gaming though, give the X2 some serious thought. You'd be surprised what a difference it can make.

Though I still stick by what I said before: If all you do is game, the San Diego is probobaly the better bet.

EDIT:

One other thing to consider: With the X2, you can always set core preference to running processes, so you could assign all your background tasks to one core, and your game to the other... so that spikes in demand from other processes won't change your FPS!

I will shutup after this, but if you wish to support a smaller name, get your goodz from TankGuys 🙂

They have my recommendation as providing the best customer service i've ever gotten

Awww, you'll make me blush

Frankly though, I think we've got a pretty crappy price on the San Diego chip. I imagine it could be had elsewhere for significantly less... so if you go that route, you'd honestly be better off buying from someone else.

If you go the 3800 route though, I am 99% sure we've got the lowest price anywhere right now @$350. Somebody over at ocforums caught me in a good mood and spurred me to engage in a price-war with the big guys. I'm sure I'll end up living in a cardboard box and eating SPAM all day, but at least I tried 😀

that is the cheapest price on the x2 3800!!!

anyway...

i'd go with single core 3700+ as well...

i play WoW (sometimes) and alt+tabbing out doesn't cause any sort of hiccups or slow downs at all...

unless you go to X2, you wont even notice the difference, except for multitasking performance loss (i speak from experience, moved from a P4 3.0E @ 3.7ghz).

I don't believe you'll consider this much of an upgrade. I came out of a 650@4.2 to this 4800+ just to play with dual core. I don't regret it at all but it was hardly an upgrade for what I do.

I've had a few boxes based on your AsusP4C800-E , they all been great!

Regards-

Crap ! My 3800 is in town on the Fedex truck, due tuesday. $380 shipped. Anytime I buy something, wait 2 days, and then look around. I allways miss the boat on the good deals.

And get the 3800.

Edit: Actually it was $375 shipped (I got the wrong shipping, it was free at newegg) and yours is $10 shipping. But I still would have saved $15 net.

That's why after you buy something, you don't look at prices for a few weeks! Painful though, I know!

i'm getting one of those Tankguys > the egg shirts 😛

edit- and OP i think its been covered but i'd get the x2 as well. the fps you may lose, if noticeable, will be offset by the better overall performance.

That one has been pretty popular!

I have another interesting idea for one, I'm toying with this weekend... though somehow I doubt my Photoshop skills will be up to the challenge!

My recommendation is the X2. I've been seeing overclocks ranging from 2.4GHz to 2.7GHz on air, so I would suggest you try your luck. Also, dualcore will mean future-proofing your system, since by the end of 2005, we should be seeing a few multithreaded games, and by the end of 2006, the singlethreaded game will be a thing of the past.
