My PC turns itself off - the power just goes out.

When I use 2k, it will just turn off, like a power failure. I have to pull out the power cable from the back of the supply, and re-plug it in and switch back on.

It happens every time I use the machine, after a random period of time (always less than 10 minutes).

I have a 98 partition on the same machine and it doesn't appear to have this problem (although I haven't used it as much - but I did have the 98 partition running for a couple hours last night with no problem).

Is this a power supply problem, or a VERY weird Windows 2000 problem???

Please help - my machine is unusable at the moment.

Disable all the APM/ACPI stuff in BIOS. Then try Win2K. Also (and this is a long shot) look at the power button on the front. I had a customer with a case that was doing what you describe (except with Win98) and the plastic of the power button was scraping the plastic of the front bezel. This was keeping the power button in an odd position and when if finally popped all the way out the machine would shut down. They had to flip the power switch on the back of the P/S to get the thing to restart.

Thanks for the ideas guys, but I found out what it was.

I just came home and turned it on, and it went pop, and all this cool smoke came out of the back of the power supply.

My computer room stinks now.
