^ well I am happy to report the Single Rail generic power supply from Xtech plays perfect. I ran Metro 2033 on high and Black Ops 2 on max 8X AA both for an hour and the PC never shut off.

Everything went fine. Who knew Single Rail PSU were so Amazing? it has 36A on the single 12V rail which seemed about right to power my PC.

So it seems it was never the video card and it seems like I indeed got an awesome deal for this GPU for $55. Only thing is the generic PSU the cables are so short lol and I have a cooler master HAF tower the tall ones so obviously this 3rd world PSU won't reach soI had to put the tower on its side and put the PSU in an odd position. lol

I guess in future I am going to be buying a Single Rail PSU. And not from cooler master will have to look for a better brand. Odd, I taught cooler master was a top brand which is why I used to buy everything from them. Though their very cheap stuff admittedly. I guess because the 4870 was pulling from 2 rails with its dual PCIE 6 pin power connectors is why it ran fine the load was spread evenly?

the thing about this generic xtech is its a almost new PSU it was used for testing in a pc for a few months back in 2011 but was packed away after and never used again. So its old but fairly new.

Great. Enjoy.

I still stand by the overheating problem with the cooler master PSU probably caused by the mess inside it. If the card worked for a while before crashing, then its heat problem.

I will try to open the cooler master PSU and give it a clean out and see if that helps.

PCIE 6 PIN that comes direct out of the PSU is on its own separate 12v rail right? yeah the PSU is pretty dusty inside will have to give it a cleaning.

unfortunately after 2 hours of gaming the PC shut down instantly again.

For what its worth since this is indeed a old generic trash PSU with 36A on single rail can we now rule out faults with video card and safely say a new PSU will solve all these issues?

battlefield 3 on ultra in single player mode does not cause it to turn off. Multi player however does after a period of time.

My guess is Multi player uses lots of CPU power which would cause the PSU to trip. It will instantly shut down in a certain part of Grim Dawn where it dips to 35 fps

could we safely rule out any issues with the GPU now? could we tell its 100% the PSU problem now?

Ok guys I opened my cooler master PSU and I took some pics let me know how bad this dust is and if this could be causing the problems I am seeing.

Doesn't look too dirty.
It looks like you need to get quality PSU.
I'm using Chieftec PSUs mostly. Never had problem. My is 7 (or more?) years old and works like like a charm. And boy, it didn't had easy time.
I was cleaned once every two years or so. It worked up until recently in not so well ventilated case with top mounted psu. In this config PSU takes hot air from inside the case to cool itself.
Made a sparks a couple of times, when I fiddled with connectors with the PC running - not a single PC part ever died which is amazing.
Well...scratch that. I killed 3.5'' HDD because of the short-cutting molex fan connector with the HDD case - one wire from the fan connector was loose and slid out of the connector.

I guess you better check Power Supplies board for more information.

Lol.... are we looking at the same picture?
Did you forget to use a sarcasm tag?

He needs to clean that up no wonder he is having issues...

Yeah, that amount of dust will likely cause the PSU to overheat, when under load. I would def. clean it.

well guys now that its clean, it will run DayZ. Prior to this it would not run dayz for more than 1 minute. Now it can run dayz for more than 1 hour well thats how long I tried it for anyways.

It will definitely shut down on Grim Dawn which happens to be a very demanding game the 7850 dips to 30 FPS in that game and it will trip easily.

Most interesting is the hitachi deskstar HDD started smoking when I put back in the PSU hmm

Amazingly I put this PSU in another PC with a Athlon X4 760K CPU along with the same 7850 video card it just works fine

It works 100% perfect after many hours in the heat playing most intensive games.
Then when I put it back in the intel haswell system it shuts off ASAP again.

Just Amazing because the AMD CPU uses more watts

Honestly OP, it's generic and it's 4 years old. So it's quite possible the thing will die on you any moment. I would just go get a quality PSU and call it a day...

A quality PSU will last you many years. Want hassle free? Go with Corsair. RMAing is dead simple even though you might have to have the return to a mainland US address.

I've had to RMA about 3 Corsair PSUs (2 died after years of use in the USVI -- WAPA can't keep the lights on for a week straight-- and one had annoying coil whine) and it was painless. Seasonic on the other hand was a pain in the butt, but this was a few years back. Can't speak about their service now.
