My PC is outdated. Need a new one.

First off Hello guys! 🙂 I would like to start off by saying this is my first post I am very new to the topic of computer hardware and apologize in advanced for being a noob but I will try my best to not be a total noob. I am also a budding audio engineer and have recently began learning how to mix music. I have decided it would be best for me to to start looking in to getting a computer.

This is what I have now: (I understand it is horrible.)
Manufactuer: Hewlett-Packard Company
Model: p6243w
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1200 2.10
Installed Memory: 3.00 (2.87 usable)
System Type: 64 Bit

I will use this template from the stickies to make things easier.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for:

As I said music producing, recording music, mixing, using CPU intensive audio plugins, using the internet of course, not much gaming (I do very little PC gaming and when I do its old or simple stuff like Baldur's Gate or Minecraft)

2. What YOUR budget is:

500$ (USD) Give or take a few.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from:

'Murica 😀 (USA)

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from:

I'm planning on staying in America.

5. IF YOU have a brand preference:

Only preferences I have is PC opposed to Mac, because some of the software I will use is PC only. As as other brand stuff like Nividia and all that, nope not a fanboy of anything.

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are:

I don't think so, I guess my monitor; HP 2009m.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds:

Default.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using:

I honestly don't know. I guess whatever is average if there is an average, sorry 🙁

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?:

Well, not in a hurry I can wait.

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?:

Not that I know of, I mean besides the little bit of Audio stuff I have. Windows I guess but I didn't know you had to buy that.

Ok, hopefully I helped. Like I said still a beginner but I'm trying. Thanks in advanced for any advice and I will be glad to help with any further details.
I was told this:

"Get a quality power supply, motherboard, and CPU, and a good amount (8+) gigs of RAM and you'll be good to go for quite some time."

and that I didn't need an extreme graphics card. I also don't need to worry about an upgraded soundcard or speakers.

So to be clear, your $500 has to include a windows license?

It's possible to custom build a PC on your budget, but it's tricky, at the $500 including windows price point, it's pretty hard to beat the OEM's like HP/Lenovo/Dell etc.

You could try something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard ($58.80 @ Amazon)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Rosewill Line-M MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($38.42 @ Mwave)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 300W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($39.99 @ Mwave)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($19.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit) ($94.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $490.16
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

It hits all of the basics for your price range. You've got:
A reasonable quad-core CPU
HDMI/DVI/VGA video outs
8 GB of RAM
Compact, but serviceable case
Reputable power supply
Win8 license

I'd make sure to partition that HDD into system+apps /// storage+data and save my pennies for an SSD 🙂

On the other hand, here are a bunch of pre-builts with intel i5's, 1 TB HDDs, and 6-8 GB of RAM. They are all under $500, and all include windows licenses, and probably much better warranty support!

Edit:

Save 2 bucks and pick up the Line-M from Amazon:

Don't use AMD cpu's for music editing. Ableton, tractor, avid, final scratch, etc. are single core hogs. I'd say a pre-built i3 system would work well. Inspiron 660s with i3-3240 for 400.- and add a Xonar sound card and your in the mix. Probably want at least 8gb ram too.

Would I still need the sound card if I have an audio interface soundcard?

Good suggestion. Dell Outlet has good deals many times. May want to check on that. I've seen Ivy Bridge i3 systems go for under $350 I believe a few times.

Thanks guys this seems like a really good deal 😀. Hopefully I could afford to get this right now but I think I will wait until I have a little saved up.

Right now, there is a Dell Inspiron 660 with the following specs for $349 on Dell Outlet:

Processor: Intel Core 3rd Generation i3-3240 Processor (3M Cache, 3.4 GHz)
Windows 7 Home Premium
1TB Hard Drive, 3.5 Inch, 7200rpm, SATA
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600Mhz
16X DVD +/- RW Drive
Intel HD Integrated Graphics
Dell Outlet Inspiron 660 Minitower

Ivy Bridge i3 processor, 8GB of RAM. Excellent deal.

Update:

I believe the specific system is not there. Anyway, continue checking out the Dell Outlet:
