My PC has stopped working!? =(

I came home today, turned on the computer, and it just stalled on the Windows loading screen. It then goes to the black screen just before it, listing the PCI devices. All sorts of items are on there, but the one at the bottom is ACPI Controller - IRQ9 and thats it, the computer won't do anything else. This is leaving me with very little on what is wrong! This is very random indeed, it was working fine this morning and has not showed any issues since I first put it together a few months ago.

Can anyone help? It detects all other items fine (DVD drives, hard drives, etc..) during the boot up screen. Is there anything in the BIOS would could help?

It doesn't appear so.
I can F8 at the boot up screen, but it just gives me a choice of all the devices it could boot from. Each tpion brings me to the same screen again.

I'm not sure if this would help or not, but you could try chaning some of the IRQ#s in the BIOS if it allows you to do that.

Ok, all I did to fix this was switch the boot order of my 2 hard drives. For some reason the 2nd hard drive (of which I primarily just use for storage) jumped ahead of the 1st hdd (with OS, key docs, etc..) (!?)

Could I be having problems because my 2 hdd's are identical? Both WD 4000YR's. Have the same techy name in device manager, etc..

Both Hdd's are nowhere near full (90% empty on the 1st one) and HDD Tune has picked up no "health" problems.

The above problem happened to me again tonight. This time the BIOS just wouldn't detect the main OS drive. I unplugged and replugged the cables and it showed up; I switched the boot orders around again but it struggled again.
For me to finally fix it, I switched the main OS drive (which is sttached to sata1) into sata 2 and the secondary hdd into sata1 (which was on sata2). So far so good. Has my main OS drive just got fed up with the sata1 connection and decided to stop working?

Can anyone shed some insight so as to prevent help prevent me from living on a knife-edge everytime I turn my PC on!

Many Thanks.

How old is the machine and what PSU are you using?

No hardware changes + cold boot issues could be capacitors going bad on the motherboard or in the PSU.

Antec Smart Power 450W. It's pretty new; Asus A8N-E; AMD X2 4200+; Put it together myself in about March/April.

i had similar problems occasionally with my a8n deluxe, every so often i would get an error that the ntoskrnl or some file was corrupt on boot up and all i would change is the sata port and it would just boot up fine.
