So I'm at the dump, getting rid of my boys old swing set. In the scrap metal pile is a computer....probably an old 386, I think.

I make another trip to the pile, and notice it has usb ports....hmmmm.... must be at least a pentium.....no no no I think... I'm here to get rid of stuff...not pick up more junk.

So I make my third trip to the pile..... and turn the case over....zip drive... cd burner... slot load cdrom...hmmmm... made by micron.... they made pretty good stuff, didn't they? No no no... already have a closet full of useless computer junk...

Dumped my last load in the pile... checked to make sure no one is watching... grabbed it.

It booted up just fine. :) Duel boot linux and win nt. Linux won't boot though... I can relate, had the same problem myself. ;)

It has a smokin' 300mhz p2
128 megs o ram 2x64
2 hard drives. one an ibm. (back when they were good)
a riva 128 video card. diamond v330
3com nic

and all the drives seem to work fine.

So was it worth it? I can use the ram, and the nic, and probably the hard drives. The other stuff will probably be taking up space for years...

Those V330s were the rage back in the day. I remember paying $150 for one! :D

I scored the PSU from a '86 compaq at the dump yesterday..

I got it for parts.

tried unsoldering the stuff, and it must have had some kind of high heat solder. So after pissing around with the soldering gun forever, i decided to whip out the torch.

burning PCB's are the stink.
peww. i still smell that sh!t.

argh!!

Good find! Intel must be hating on an OS tht does NOT make Socket 7 and Slot 1s obsolete.

What mobo/chipset has it got? I need an ATX mobo/cpu for my computer clustering project. Do you mind giving those parts away? I'll pay for shipping of course.

It's a 440lx chipset. 2 isa slots 4 pci 1 agp. It and the massive slot one processor, complete with passive heatsink, are yours for the cost of shipping.

It's 10x better than the machine I built for my daughter... out of spare parts that have been sitting around for about 3 years (and were old before that....)

I'd use that machine for my kids and cycle hers into Linux testing or router... (I really need to start learning linux.... really I do....)

I paid 229.99 AT fry's and two weeks later it dropped to 199.99 so I got my 30 bucks back:D

Then about two weeks after that it dropped to 179.99:Q they wouldn't price match that though.

I bought it the first day fry's had them. Damn that was a sweet card.

I sold it when I bought my Geforce2 MX for 199.99 to a friend for 25 dollars.

Recently a friend of mine was upgrading a local health care center....they threw out almost 300 working computers. He filled up his truck that day. I got two Dells...Optiplex GXpro. Pentium Pro 200, 128meg....everything worked perfect and they look like new. XP runs excellent on the things.

Supposedly the reason they couldn't donate them was there were liability problems....since they were at a health care facility. Too bad.
