Never had a need for one until now (I'm 24).

I felt like Ralphie from A Christmas Story, checking the mailbox everyday in vain for my Little Orphan Annie decoder ring, then tearing into the Priority Mail envelope today :p

Don't leave it laying around in the open, keep it someplace safe, just a word of caution.

Solid advice right there. I know someone who lost their passport on the road in Iowa with an international flight days away, and the nearest office was somewhere in Colorado... 8hr drive each way, and he managed to oversleep and miss the appointment. Needless to say, his unwilling traveling companions (this was during a music tour) were not the happiest bunch.

You got that right.

I never smile for official photos. If anyone ever needs to scrutinize one chances are you're one mistaken identity away from getting your ass billyclubbed. Not my idea of a laughing matter. ;)

...Upon further review, for some reason my passport photo makes me look like I have some gigantic, Kanye West-esque cheeks... wtf?

And so he goes and posts a pic on the internet instead...even if the lettering is ilegible, it just seems like poor judgement. *shrug*

The only info in a passport that a quick Google search couldn't turn up on me is the passport number itself. And exactly which border stations accept inkjet-printed passports as a valid entry document?

Besides, I think it's safe to say that the majority of ATOTers never leave their computer in mom's basement bedroom, much less the country.
