My parents say the damnest things...

Let me start by prefacing that my parents are not the most sophisticated people around - just good ole hard worker types.

Anyway, I decided to swap out their cable box for a HD tuner (it was the same price, so I thought why the hell not). So I get the thing set up and what not. I see my dad watching some basketball game on TNT so I tell him that he can get the same game in HD if he just puts it on TNTHD. So I change it for him and he says "what happened?" I say what do you mean? He says it looks exactly the same.

WTF? A blind person can tell the difference between HD and non HD content!

My sister-in-law is the exact same way. I think people like that need to get their eyes checked, because there's a considerable difference. Even my wife wants to smack her upside the head when she says that.

My grandfather is going mostly blind so he bought this massive 50 inch HDTV and sits about 3 feet in front of it to watch football games. I think he wouldn't notice if I swapped it out with a lower definition one because he can't really see the difference. He just wanted something MASSIVE.

My 85 y.o. Grandad is literally half blind due to macular degeneration, and even he can tell the difference between HD and SD.

He loves the HD football, btw.

Are these the same parents that eat at places that you might call diners where the food is so bland, but so cheap you wonder how they stay in business?

Yeah, I know them.

It's too damn hard to play with you. You tear it up with the smg. No one else can get a kill in.

well HD on cable/satellite may not be full definition anyway...that could be it. I think it's the discovery channel that has some of the best HD (may be a regional/market thing).

I know a guy that swears he can tell 1080i vs 1080p at 20+ feet though...this is what's called 'rationalizing' your purchase though in my book.

I really want to upgrade to a 50" Pioneer Plasma, but my 32" Toshiba Cinema Series tube from 1997 is still so nice looking. Even people with average flat panels comment on the picture quality (it's semi-calibrated with the DVD and filters)

I have heard a lot of people say that. It is mostly because they are really fucking stupid and too lazy to pay attention for 5 seconds.

Do they have an HD TV?

LOL, yes. 3 or so months ago, they got an Samsung LCD HDTV

That's my parents to a "T". They even avoid the HD channels because sometimes SD broadcasts put bars with logos on the sides of the screen. They would rather watch fat, stretchy people----can't waste the real estate.
