My parents owe over 16k in taxes this year. They are self employed and have a business, but 16k? NJ sucks when it comes to taxes.

Does 16k seem a bit much? Does anyone here pay that much in taxes? I swear I think it's a Jersey thing.

Poor baby...living off a 200k income must be tough to handle. What can I do to help put food on your table?

The homeless and illegal immigrants got nothing on your family, they don't know the meaning of pain and suffering.

We all pay taxes. Your parents owe a lot because they made a lot. Shut the fvck up. You aren't the one who slaved to earn the money.

I'm not whining about this issue but I do think it's a Jersey thing and I have a hunch my parents would be paying much less if they were in another state. Well let's exclude California and New York. :)

NJ treats small business owners like sh*t in my opinion.

Your parents consumed more than 16k worth of services last year, rest assured.

AFAIK NY rate is 10% CA rate is 9%, and those are the 2 highest

True, you don't see too many CA residents complaining about their taxes. It mostly comes from the East coast and mostly from NJ and maybe NY.

I'm assuming most of that $16,000 is Schedule C (self-employment) income?

Of course.

Gotta love paying into a system that most of us here plan on never using. I have 40 years until I retire and I fully expect the system to be overhauled to an unrecognizable point or scrapped before then. :|

I should add that I realize that the system as is is workable. That doesn't change my opinion of the overall system or its operation.

I know many, many Californians who bitch about the state and their taxes. Hell, they bitch about most anything they come in contact with. The air is smelly, the grass isn't pretty enough, the sidewalk is too hard, etc.

WTF how can we say if $16k is too much without knowing what they grossed? If they made $20k, yeah it's too much. $20 million they got off easy. This is A DUMB THREAD.

If they owe that much in taxes, they probably didn't pay quarterly taxes as they were supposed to. (Either that, or they had a spectacular last quarter and should be celebrating.)

Paying taxes sucks, but it's a fact of life, and quite frankly, should not come as a surprise to your parents. Sounds like they failed to plan for this properly.

I suspect they planned and are paying as planned but happened to let tec know how much it was and he was thinking about how $16k would buy him that new flat screen he's wanted, whilst forgetting about what the $16k also affords him, like paved roads and the best military in the world, etc.
