I just got him Saturday (about 2 inches)...and he's looking mighty frightened....he has barely moved since I put him in the tank...there's 4 Giant Danios in the tank too...44 gallons..

Any help will be appreciated.

I had a brutal time starting Oscars as babies. I finally found one shop that told me to but like one tablespoon of aquarium salt per every 5 gallons of water. Never had one die since then. Medication that always seemed to work for me was that Myracim II (sp?). I used to use that whenever they stopped eating, always brought them around.

Giant Danios, LOL I hope you dont mind if they suddenly dissapear one day.

misses his 9.5" tiger oscar

Had to get rid of him due to my horney Jack Dempseys.

Finally got rid of all their offspring.

Here I'll try to help you how is your water chemistry is it cloudy?
What type and how many filters do you have on the tank?
I would suggest adding a heater if you dont have one.

sry to bud in here but Im looking to get into this hobby. Not looking to spend a fortune but looking at a 55g tank roughly nothing too fancy. Any ideas? Places in Canada would be of best interest.

For a 55gallon tank I would suggest a Natures View tank from Oceanic possibly the highest quality glass aquarium maker.
For a great no maintance inexpensive filter for a 55gal. I would suggest a sand fludizer. Namely LifeGuard FB300 made by Rainbow Plastics(you can get one here. Use a small internal filter to power that filter and to provide mechanical/chemical(optional) filtration.

/edit had to fix 2nd link

www.aquariacentral.com is by far the best i've been too.

I'm pretty sure hes just sulking. Oscars all do that after being moved, give him a few weeks, maybe a month. Is the 44 gallon a hex? If it is, its dimensions are probaly taller than longer, and might not provide that well of swimming room for when your oscar gets bigger. The tank has been fully cycled right?

Pls pm me if you have any more questions. i seem to pop on here less and less now adays

Zeroburn, where in canada are you at? www.bigalsonline.com is a favorite here. they also have brick and mortar stores which i prefer. For filters, my preferences are witht he fluval classics, or pros if you have the money, and than after that the emperor 400 and 280 filters. With those filters you have enough bio filtration that you shouldnt need a fluidized sand bed, which is a lot less flexable.

less flexable yes but it requires little maintaince all you need to do is clean out the spray head from bacteria and make sure no sand gets into the water entrance tube. To reduce the risk of getting sand stuck in the tube I would use a tube to attach to the bottom of the sand filter.

Yea the filter is overkill but its extremely cheap to buy/run. Versus the fluval you need to replace the sponge pads every 2-3months which is a pain in the arse since you have to remove the whole filter system.

Thanks for the info guys....the tank is a pentagon tank...it's been through a cycle...the tank isn't cloudy at all...my water is perfect...but no heater (buying one today).

BUT...he's looking good now...this morning he was swimming around nicely...I do think he's eyeing the Giant Danios though 🙂

Thanks for the input...I'll update later tonight!@
