My optical mouse doesn't shut off.

Basicly the red light on the bottom of my mouse stays on even when the computer is off. I have to switch off the power supply to get it off which is very annoying. Any fixes for this?

EDIT: I don't care that it is on, i just don't want my mouse to fail sooner.

It is on ps/2

 
Your powesupply is providing standby power to your motherboard and the PS/2 port so if you have something like wake on keyboard or mouse enabled your mouse can power on your system, unless you bios has an option to shut this off I don't belive there is a way to prevent standby power from going to your PS/2 ports and lighting up your mouse, I highly doubt that it will shorten the lifespan of your mouse by leaving this light on, the mechanical parts of your mouse will wear out long before the LED stops working.

as was said above... if you go into bios and turn off the settings for "wake on" it should solve the problem

different bios versions show it different, but most times they are all together, ie. wake on lan, wake on usb, wake on keyboard, etc (since its ps2 the wake on keyboard is probably the one you gotta worry about)
 
how can you tell if its on? well its not invisible, so you would have to turn it over to tell

i cant tell if mine is on or not, when i pick it up yeah i can tell. but i dont really care
 
i think he is just worried it will make his mouse "die sooner"

you have nothing to worry about, when th emouse is not moving it goes into a sort of standby mode anyways and it does not actually flash its sensor or anything like that.
 
My Intelli Mouse stays on too, but only when its on a PS2 port. I don't really care though. Its actually sort of useful when I have to walk around the house in the middle of the night.
 
just let it run usb. when i keep my microsoft mouse on ps2, the light stays on. anyways, usb is better, so that's 2 reasons to switch to usb. 🙂
 
The MX500/510 are supposed to always stay in bright mode when the computer is on (unlike many optical mice that have a less bright mode). Do you have a BIOS setting enabled to turn the computer on at the press of a mouse button? I've accidentally done that before and my optical mouse has stayed lit.
 
I'm Pretty sure PS2 is better for mice actually, for gaming atleast. I suppose it doesn't matter at all for everything else.

what he said!! also i have the mx510,switched it to usb and it turns off with the pc🙂
 
first of all with an mx510, you can't even tell if the light is on of off cause it is not visible when the mouse if in it's normal position.

USB is better? How? Surely it's better to use the dedicated ps2 port than take up a potentially more useful usb port?
