So I spent some time in the past few days stress testing and bencmarking my new processor. The max stable clock using a voltage that I feel safe using (>1.6v) seems to be somewhere between 2.92 and 3.02 ghz. I'm sticking with 2.93ghz for now.

StressPrime for 14+ hours. I've actually run it past 24 hours in both small and large FFT's in priority 10 to ensure complete stabilty.

geez, so wouldn't that mean a dual-core opteron would destroy a dual-core x2 probably?

(not that the price wouldn't kill it too :p)

Nice!

FWIW, your CPU benchmarks are just about 1/2 of my X2. What this suggests to me is that it probably makes more sense to buy an X2 3800+ for ~$300 and overclock it to 2.5GHz, than to buy an Opteron 146 for ~$220 and run it at 2.8GHz. Buying an Opteron 144 for $150 and clocking it at 2.8GHz would also be a good option. I'm building another system at the moment and this helps me decide which cpu to drop into it. It's either gonna be a 144 or and X2 3800+... depending on how rich I'm feeling.

EDIT: just tested the 8M SuperPi on one of my cores and it finished in 6'16" so that's about 20% slower, corresponding no doubt to the 20% lower clock.

Very nice.....

If I wasn't so impressed with dual core performance that would be a sweet chip...

The one thing that is nice and we all need to consider is this shows us there is obviously some refinement in the process being done and some room left on the 90nm chips....There was a time just about 3-4 months back when 2.6ghz-2.7ghz was about the best you could get even with water.

Needless to say I will never buy another non dual core chip for myself....I am still quite happy with my 3000+ winnie that does 2.6ghz at 1.48v and runs 42c load with air cooling.......

So far the CABNE stepping is the crème of the crop, it is so far the best silicon produced by AMD, with opteron 144's being able to hit 3Ghz+ at about 1.5v, and the CABNE 0528GPMW is currently the best silcon, hitting around 3.2Ghz on about 1.45v  i actually placed an order with a company that clearly stated on their website that they had this specific stepping opteron 148 left in stock, but the next day i received an email stating that they no longer did, so i took my chances and got the dual core opteron 165 which has done me proud :)

Also the CABYE which you have is also one of the best steppings hitting an average 2.9Ghz like you have stated but not alot more without high voltage. The CABGE stepping which is currently in circulation in most places now is supposed to be quite poor, hitting around 2.7 at 1.6 volts.

So the hype about the opteron's being good overclockers is true but not iron clad so be sure not to purchase a CABGE if you can.

I assume that AMD were able to produce quite a few FX57 grade silicon with the CABNE stepping, and did not want to over produce the FX57 as these chips are not in great demand, so they re-badged up the new opteron s939?s when they were released to clear stock, and maybe also to purposely create hype.. who knows for sure.

FYI: the CABNE is actually FX57 grade silicon, hence the high OC on low voltage, so unless you have one now you have pretty much missed the boat with the opteron wonder chip's, as did I :( ohh well i have two fx55's :p

Lets just hope that the higher grade of silicon used isn't low yield, so AMD can mass produce these chips when it matters :). The current low overclocks of the E6 venice chips brings a frown to my face :(.

Too bad your CABYE can't pass 3.0GHZ by much even with water :(.

Not all the CABGE's are complete dogs.

My 150 is a CABGE and it does 2760 at default VCore. 2880 at 1.5V.

Of course I paid a premium for the 12X multiplier.

On water. These chips do run HOT, even with slight overclocks. I don't know how safe I would have felt about OC'ing these with the stock cooler. :)
