my old Zalman 7700 cpu cooler is getting old

Hi,

I got a Zalman 7700 HSF installed on my old P4, now i got a new A64.
The HSF seems a little rusted thanks to the dust.
I have use it like 2 years now..

Do i really have to get a new one? or anyway i can make it look new and use it on my new A64 S939?
I know the performance may dropped a bit, but it is still better than the stock cooling.

I'm using a 7000B, you should be fine with the 7700 if the only problem is cosmetic

how long have you been using it?

it is kinda rough on the surface of the fins.

it is possible the dust is just "burnt" onto the fins of the heatsink. You could try using a slightly dampened old toothbrush or something similar and scrubbing the fins. Just a thought.

I think it should clean up so you can use it again.

i just read about Arctic Cooling Accelero, which one is better actually?
are they about the same price?

How closely did you read? The Accelero is a GPU HS/F, you can't use it on a CPU.

Well you have a good HS/F now, I would keep it.

For the GPU I would get the VF-700 or 900, I'm not a fan of AC.

AC Alpine 64 isn't worth it. You might want to try Freezer 64 Pro...better yet, try a Scythe Ninja Plus. Guaranteed to give you good cooling for CPU. As for GPU, go with a VF700/VF900 if you want a small cooler. If you want big cooler that covers entire card, go with an Arctic Cooling Silencer/Accelero (depending on what you have). Pretty much both give you around the same results, so just pick the one you like/can afford.

seriously, I've been using 7000 for more than a year now, I blow air to dust-off and it's been going strong since day 1

I'm always using this kinda stuff for 2 years.
It all depends on the quality.
So I won't change it, but choose another GPU cooler is a good idea.

I've got a NV Silencer on my GeForce 4 TI 4400, and I've had it since 2002 I think. Never had any problems.

Regardless of what other tests have shown, over at XS there is a 8-9 page thread about how the VF900 has been preforming worse than stock X1800s and X1900s (the hottest GPUs).
