my office has the worst internet ever

we're paying for a T1 line and quite often it's barely as fast as 256 dsl. in addition, there are large fluctuations in latency. and i know we're paying a ton for it too. and the company one of the partner's cronies) that provides it just went into bankruptcy. awesome.

I work at a public comm college and our Internet service is pretty good. Actually we also share our Internet with two or more public High Schools and about 4 Community Satelite locations. It is pretty darn good. Probably just your lousy IT dept, or lack of it.

How many employees? A T1 does not really cut it these days for more than 15 or 20 employees. Of course, if you limit access to work related stuff, a T1 goes a lot further.

But a T1 should have a QOS guarantee. If you are not getting T1 speeds when no one else is using the line, you need to call your provider.

How many people are using it? A T1 is not a lot but I know companies that use one or two of them for a few thousand users.

Business use doesn't need a lot of bandwidth to deliver E-mail.

our network is fast as hell, however because we are forced to use IE, its seems slow as balls, IE crashed on me at least 5 times a day trying to load stuff

4 employees are here right now. i'm sure that none of the others are intentionally downloading. i wouldn't be surprised if some of the computers here are being used for botnets though. i can only lock down the ones i'm in charge of.

If there are only 4-5 people using it then your ISP is terrible or you have physical layer problems (errors, slips, clocking).

Keep in mind AT BEST you'll see around 200 KBytes/sec throughput with TCP on a T1.

There are many different types of T1, maybe you guysdon't have a full T1? But I think spidey07 is right, you need to have your IT dept look at the switch to see if you have any errors through the line.

T1 is a TDM technology. There's no real switch involved, only TDM muxes.

T1 is a TDM technology. There's no real switch involved, only TDM muxes.

Most non IT understand switch/router. CSU/DSU module can be placed into a managed switch if it has the option, so telling someone to check the switch would be fine, although saying router would probably have actually been correct, not switch.

It could be people who aren't there leaving streaming radio stations going. We had a problem with that a couple years back, I think we were on dual t1s and it was rare for me to be able to hit 50k/sec because of all the streamers (I'm in a office with ~300 people).

We couldn't block the ports, as there were lots of legit reasons people would be streaming.

It's not an issue now - I'm not sure what we have these days, but it's pretty sweet. I'll usually get about 3MB/sec uploading and often 10MB/sec+ downloading. I just did Speakeasy bandwidth tests to Atlanta and Chicago servers, and I think I broke the meter.

Yesterday were getting less than 56k speeds on our network. My employer has purchased all the available bandwidth and we need about twice as much as we have. They are working to get more fiber but thats talking about 100+ mile runs to get it here.

In 1999 I worked for an office of approxately 30 govt administrators and 2 computer labs with about 20 workstations. It was for a non-profit extension of the dept of labor.

Our internet connection was a single ISDN line that was split via an old Bay Networks box called "Instant Internet" It basically served as a gateway router, but it used IPX rather than IP...

Trust me, it can't be that bad.

T1 is a crappy connection, we use it here at my work as well....no biggy though we are picking up 4 lines of fiber through MNDOT in 2 weeks. uhmmmmmmmmmm unlim. BW FOREVER!!
