I didn't think they would be available this quickly. I went in today to buy a Cooler Master V8, and walked past the CPU cabinet, and there they were. Tiny boxes. And a wall of about 5 variations of P55 mobos from ASUS and Gigabyte. Saweet.

Canada Computers seem to have them for sale as well since like Thursday. So is Intel going to go after everyone because of that NDA thing?

BTRY, we have the same motherboard and I just picked up a Q9550 from MC a few days ago. I paid $169.99 and they just dropped them to $159.99 so I hope they'll give me a $10 refund. It's unopened so I'll just return and rebuy if they don't.

Uhhh, yeah, the reason for my message. What RAM and HS/Fan are you running and any helpful info on the BIOS settings? I got my E8400 up to 4.0 ghz no problem (actually an E3110 Xeon) but am still newbish with OCing and I know the quads don't play so nice.

I had a talk with the sales guy in MC yesterday. I went in to buy a CPU cooler, and noticed the 1156 CPU's they now had. I asked the difference between the i5 and i7 (already knowing) and he answered correctly. So now we can continue our conversation. :)

I asked how it is possible for MC to sell these at such big discounts compared to say, Newegg, who usually have low prices in their own right. He told me that MC actually takes a loss on these CPU's and count on peripheral sales people usually buy along with a CPU, like a mobo, ram, HDD's, cases. Cases are a big markup item at MC. So that is the story. They take a big loss on the CPU's hoping to attract the customers with the unbelievably, and rightly so, low price on a state of the art CPU, and counting on them to load up on accompanying items to go along with the CPUs. Neat huh?

hehe.

that is really freakin impressive that he knew. I'm serious. What sales staff member of any other major national chain store would know the answer to that question? think about it... what would happen if you went to bestbuy or circuit city or radio shack and asked? they'd probably tell you the i7 is 64bit and the i5 is only 32 bit or the i5 works with pci-e graphics cards while the i7 can't... :)

Of course, I've never been to fry's (Come on Fry's... if you build it, they will come... Boston... Fenway Park... Citgo Sign...)

See I was going to get one, but I ended up just getting the i7 920 instead. I'd rather move to the 1366 platform, even if X58 motherboards are going to cost more, but I think it's a better "long" term investment, especially at 200 for the cpu.

Some US pricing info about LGA-1156 CPU and Motherboard:

"Ahead of a formal launch, pricing of socket LGA-1156 processors, an untimely leak from Newegg.com that was updating its site, spilled pricing details of a broad range of socket LGA-1156 processors and motherboards. These prices give us an indication of what prices will finally look like, in the US market, and more or less match speculated prices doing rounds for quite some time now."

The one close to me has a couple of knowledgeable nerds too. It is nice to be able to ask a question and get a real answer. Of course they have a couple of dudes who blow smoke up the rears of some less than informed customers too.

For the chips being cheap, they call it a Loss Leader I believe. Like said above and by another poster they tend to make their profits off other items. Yet, that doesn't mean that you can't get decent deals on other parts there too. I got my HAF 932 there for less than newegg. Of course I had to pay sales tax, but I didn't have to pay shipping. My last PSU ended up being about $5 more expensive than if I ordered it online, but to me that is worth it for on the spot purchases. Their video card prices though tend to be pretty high with one or two cards at a time being the exception. I think they had the EVGA GTX 275 not long after launch for 199 AR which wasn't far from online pricing.

Anyways, I like microcenter. It is the only real shop in my town now that compusa is dead.

They weren't selling them until today, but had P55 boards out on display just not the chips for them.

x2

I thought about the P55 and i5/i7 860, but then decided the i7 920 was a better choice for me. It OC's well, and provides more RAM.

Yeah same with the Mayfield, OH one. There is not so great guys as well.

Buying my i7 I asked for the D0 stepping knowing the proc code for it (SLBEJ). The first associate that comes up and offers to help me, I ask if they have any in stock (seeing one in the cabinet that is SLBEJ). He goes, checks, and comes back telling me they don't have any, so I see he is useless and tell him I'll think about it. Another guy came over 20 min later and asked as well (Justin something, I forget his last name though) and when I said that I was told there were no D0 steppings he had a  look on his face and says "I'll be right back" and comes back with one.

After talking to him a bit more he actually knew more then most of the people who work tech retail.

I was at the MI one tonight and aghast to see that ALL i7 920s were GONE! The clerk said they're supposed to have two in stock, but they can't find them. Another clerk said he was *pretty sure* more would come in and advised me to get a rain check. Ooooh, I hope that I'm not getting shut out. OTOH, if you want P55 stuff, they're stacked to the rafters with it. Bleah.

Yes, Westbury.

They did have Q9950's for 159.00. 10.00 cheaper than the last shipment they had.
