How hard is it to install a 3rd party fan on a video card?

Do newer video cards throttle the fan so that if I'm not playing 3d games it can stfu?

I don't think this card used to be so loud. I tried cleaning the fan out but it's still really loud.

Got a Zalman fan. It helps. Next time I might get a passively cooled card.

Only ATI card fans are thermally controlled... but if they werent a lot of people would be deaf :p

Try to find a AC Silencer. I think its version 5 or something...

This is simply untrue. The 6600 may not have fan control but that certainly doesn't apply to all nVidia cards.

I installed This on my 6600gt not too long ago. If you have the room (you need at least 2 slots open aside from the graphics card) the silencer is the best cooler for the price.

Of course you could get a zalman but they don't exhaust air outside the case like the silencer. Not to mention my idle and load emps went down about 5-10 degrees. Oh and it's practically inaudible. Good luck with whatever choice you make!

Edit: or if heat isn't an issue just use Rivatuner to control it's fan speed. On my 6600gt the change in fan speed from 100% to 95% may seem minimal, but no lie it cut the noise in half.

actually a lot of older 6600gts, the bios is set to spin it at full speed all the time, 3d or 2d.

you can use nhibitor to edit your biios and reflash it so that it turns it down in 2d mode. has worked on every 6600gt i've tried it on

My old 6600gt never had any sort of fan ramping... it was always loud. Maybe just this card with it BIOS? Well anyways look for the AC Silencer 5 or 4 or something.

Where can I find this nhibitor? Google search didn't help.

Rivatuner didn't seem to work.

Thanks for the link. There doesn't seem to be an option for the fan speeds. I have a GV-NX66128D. How do I know it can even throttle temperature?

i'm assuming you have a pci-e one. all 6600gts produced can throttle temp. they just do not turn on the option by default. you have to turn that on first, and in nhibitor there will be another menu that opens up with the fan speed .

i lookedat a pic of yout 6600gt. it doesnt use the reference style cooler, though i've used this on a 6800 with anon reference and it also worked. its worth a trial definitely.
