My note 2 has developed a annoying problem since the 4.3 update. It randomly turns the screen on when the phone is just sitting on the table/desk/whatever its on at the time. With no buttons pressed.

Its 1.5 years old

This never happened once before the 4.3 update.

this has now completely killed the battery dozens of time during the night when its turning the screen off and on dozens and dozens of times over the night.

It actually killed my poor stock battery(which granted was 1.5 years old so probably going anyways) from the repeated discharges and I replaced the battery(with a Samsung brand same model # battery) and the new one is doing ok but this is still happening.

I took my phone to a local cellphone repair place and he somehow was able to check the logs for my screen and told me on average while I was sleeping it was turning off and on between 100-150 times a night, no wonder I wake up more often than not late for work due to alarm not going off and phone being off and dead. He thought it might be the power button or the home button malfunctioning and triggering the screen so he tested both of them and according to him they are both ok. He then suggested I install a aftermarket rom as this only started happening after the 4.3 update so he thought it might be a software bug and that I should use a 4.2 based rom and that would probably solve the issue.

I think he is right and it would solve the issue BUT I have been trying to keep the phone stock OS. Is there any way I can un-update this thing back to 4.2??? or somehow solve this 4.3 update bug?

Agree - factory resets often cure weird upgrade issues. Then I suppose if that doesn't solve it, install a battery usage/wakelock app that will tell you what's turning off - in case it's some rouge app instead of a hardware issue.

The "battery logs" were probably accessed by going into Settings -> Battery, and counting how many times the screen turned on, on the graph.

3rd factory reset. If that doesn't fix it, I'd put money on it being a random hardware problem that developed at a rather coincidental time.

I was talking to ATT tech support a few weeks ago re: upgrades and the sr tech (not level 1 worthlessness) mentioned there were issues with the 4.3 upgrade on Note 2's (I have one too). He suggested waiting for 4.4 to be released vs going to 4.3. Just fyi.

I also suggested factory reset.

Why wait? Hit up XDA and install 4.4 now

CM11
OmniRom
SlimKat
AOKP

Tons of options, better than stock

I can't remember all the note 2 features... but does it have air gestures? Settings > My device > (scroll down to) motions and gestures > air gestures

There's one called "quick glance" on my s4 that would false trigger often so I had to disable it.
