I'm a student at Columbia coordinating a non-profit organization.

We work in the Harlem community seeking to define and reduce the link between poverty and poor health. We volunteer with kids that have asthma, sickle-cell, HIV, obesity, and diabetes and are composed entirely of undergraduates. Our organization is pretty solid, but as we grow we're encountering problems similar to businesses, loss of communication, high volunteer turnover, etc.

I'm in a position to change these things and one of the things that I want to do first is build a more solid website. I have funds at my disposal to hire a webmaster and pay for hosting, but the problem is, the people in charge don't agree with me on the importance of having a website for our organization. So I'm designing a pilot site with my weak-sauce skills to see how widely it will be used in the upcoming months.

As I spend freaking HOURS on these forums, I naturally want to implement forums on our site, but I've checked out the prices and I simply can't afford to purchase software right now on my tight college student budget.

If anyone knows where I can get really cheap forum software or any insight on how to use the net to further advance our mission of reducing poverty and poor health, please hook me up with the knowledge. Thanks!
