purple with 3X optical zoom for $144.

also this old thread caught my eye because that's about my price range

Topic Title: Yet another "best camera to buy" thread
Topic Summary: Budget of $150

bottom line in that thread - this was popular
"Canon PowerShot A590 IS Black 8.0 MP 2.5" 115K LCD 4X Optical Zoom Digital Camera
Customer Choice Award5x Winner of Customer Choice Award - Point & Shoot"

anyway, would like to hear from the pro's & and the enthusiasts.

the camera doesn't have to be purple.

Happy 9-9-9 California (Admission to the State) Day !! :sun:

Hmmm... The gods are speaking.

You need to buy the new Leica M9, which was announced today, 9-9-9, at 9.

The good news is that it's roughly* in the same price range as the camera you were looking at!

(*roughly meaning both are significantly cheaper then a house in California.)

nikon's p&s cameras have had basically nothing going for them since the early 00s. once they decided to try to beat canon, sony, and panasonic on making "me-too" p&ses the basically put no effort into their compacts.

hope you like manual focusing with the Leica M9! Any sports photography and possibly portraits will be quite difficult to hit... In addition, the viewfinder isn't TTL (hence it's a range finder).

As an owner and lover of the 990 here's my two cents...

When the 990 came out it was a top of the line p&s camera designed for enthusiasts. Recall that the MSRP for the 990 was $999 and the street price wasn't much lower. As folks have stated above, the later Nikon p&s cameras haven't been so good. Nikon abandoned the p&s enthusiast market. What is missing from the later Nikons and other cheaper p&s cameras is all the controls that you get play with on the 990. I think you will find disappointment in many of the newer p&s cameras even though they offer superior sensors and processors. Also, you'll find that the 990's macro performance is very hard (likely impossible) to beat at any price on any current p&s. I bought an Nikon S4 when it can out thinking it would replace the 990 but I have been very dissappointed with it's lack of controls and horrible over-compression of jpgs. I currently use the Canon G9 as my field camera at work and I think it is a very good replacement for the 990. My recommendation is to look at the Canon G10/11 or the Panasonic LX3 as a suitable replacement for the 990. They cost more than $150 but so did the 990.
