My NIC has no IP :(

I've installed my netgear NIC (FA310TX) and plugged it into my SMC Router (SMC7004BR).
Installed the drivers for both the NIC and the router and followed the instructions.

When I check my IP address using WINIPCFG, my Ethernet card does not show up in the adapter list. I tried removing my NIC from the control panel & re-installing the Drivers, but had no luck.

The NIC is using IRQ 11, and is sharing with my onboard CMI sound. Might that be the problem? I'm not able to force it onto it's own IRQ. Swapping PCI port didnt work.

I'm running out of ideas, have you got one?

In your networking settings did you add TCP/IP protocol to your network card? If you don't see TCP/IP listed then click the install button and install it.

EDIT: You beat me to it :)

If TCP/IP is listed as being bound but it still doesn't show up in winipcfg, re-install TCP/IP.

Yes, TCP/IP network component is installed and is listed for my card.
DNS is disabled, no gateways are identified, is using DHCP for WINS resolution and
is using auto IP addressing.

I tried removing and re-adding TCP/IP from the 'network', but it didnt make a difference.

My card lists as 'working properly'.

I'm using Win98.

Other PCs I've hooked up to the router are printing just fine.

are you using another protocol like netbios? can you see any other boxes on your network, if ur using netbios.. if not, did you make sure you entered the correct work-group name for your network? check your link-light, if its on, then your nic is fine.. sharing with the cmi sound should be ok.. let me know..

Maybe your router needs to be reset to get the MAC of the nic. I've never had that problem with my netgear rt314 but have had a major headache trying to figure out what was going on when my nic hooked up directly to my cable modem would not get an ip and dhcp would not work. Just unplug the router for 15 second, and reboot.

If the adapter is not showing as an option on the winipcfg dropdown, releasing/renewing will have no impact.

My guess is either:

1) Corrupted NIC installation (re-install NIC, possibly as a result of the IRQ conflict? Try another PCI slot, I had similar problems with my Intel Pro/100+ management adapter until I moved it to another slot.)
2) Corrupted TCP/IP installation (re-install TCP/IP)

"ipcfg /all" gave me the following:

IP COnfiguration
IP Routing Enabled : NO
WINS Proxy Enabled : NO
NETBIOS Resolution Uses DNS : No

Ethernet Adapter
Description : PPP Adapter
Physical Address: 44-45-53-54-00-00
DHCP Enabled : Yes
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask : 0.0.0.0

I tried forcing an IP, but that didnt help either.
The link light on the Router is on for both PCs.
Netbeui is not installed.
I tried Release/Renew without luck.

I still havent had any luck.

I'm going to try a crossover cable between the two PCs to see if they can access eachother.

Other than that, I dunno...

anyone else have any ideas?
