Update: Here's some pics. If got the antenna near a lot of cable and phone lines (they're not power lines :D)

Pic 1
Pic 2
Pic 3- This is a shot of the pipe mounts I used to join the two rods together.

Heheheh...I just finished my wireless network. I extended the range to over 2000' by using:

1) Two closet clothing rods
2) A grill rack
3) A 2.4 ghz dipole attachment (from Hyperlinktech.com for $19.99)
4) 75' of LMR 400 cable
5) Some funky N connectors (also from Hyperlink)
6) Some creative engineering

First, I made an antenna grille using a grill rack bent into a parabola. I then painted it while with weatherproof spray paint and attached the diploe to the center. (For you wireless geeks, it's a 19dbi antenna)

Next, I attached two 10' white closet rods together with an internal rod screwed in place. I attached it to the back of our storage shed using some pipe straps and some steel rope w/ eye bolts.

The antenna is conected to some heavy duty LMR-400 coax cable (no signal loss) and ran 40' down into my basement, where an SMC access point is located.

I drove 4 blocks away (nearly 2000') and was STILL able to browse the internet from my car. Too cool! heheheheh My goal is to share my 1500/256 DSL connection to 4 neighbors for $20/month to pay for the line, plus make a few $$$ for my trouble. My one neighbor thinks I'm a mad scientist or something because I'm always doing goofball projects like this, but he signed up for service anyway :) Anyone else do anything like this? (And yes...the network is secure, so to all you drive by hackers: don't bother).

I like people with secure wireless networks. They never suspect they have been 0wned.

Sounds great, but why a parabolic? They have a 25degree radation angle (or sometimes even less), no? Were you just wanting to see how far you could go in one general direction?

the network is secure

With wireless? Hmmm...

I've set up secure wireless infrastructures for two fortune 500 companies already, so I know what I'm doing. Trust me....it's secure ;)

Anyway, it looks pretty professional! Since the antenna tower's all white it blends in with the surroundings very well. It took my wife a good 2 days before she noticed it and started b!tching :)

802.11 and secure go together like urine and fine wine.

Fill us in w/ what you've done. No one here is interesting in the colloquial "war drive" or "war chalk", so don't worry :)

I'm always interested in finding ways to keep my wifi network more secure using the facilities provided by my hardware.

I can circumvent all the measures I've employed above on my own network fairly easily, so...

I have a specific range of locations that I'm trying to service. The antenna actually has a 17 degree radiation angle. It has about 100' of bleed-off around the base, so I'm able to use that to service my house.

Cool. I thought about putting up my 9dBi yagi so that I could work from "home" (actually, the incredible garden/park not too far from here), but I'm a bit too paranoid...

My mobile 5dBi omni has pretty horrible attenuation w/ the signal dying not too far from my home.

People with secure wireless networks stink. I want to drive around town and log onto someone elses network and take bandwidth, becase I cant get anything above a modem where I live :(

I've got 64 bit WEP on the access point, which is outside of the firewall. You then have to authenticate a valid account to a radius server to gain access, which, depending on your account, gives you access to a particular VLAN I have set up on my switch. Each user is assigned a separate VLAN, so nobody can see the other person's network. My in home network is then behind a second firewall that requires authentication to get in/out. This is pretty much the same type of setup I've set up for a couple of companies (I have the benefit of getting to use $$$$ equipment though, so my setup is a bit out of the ordinary).

Considering the fact that even from my living room I can find 5 waps in the vacinity, 3 of which are completely open, I don't think that's a problem (unless you live in a smaller town).

Sounds like it... :)

How the hell did you bend a grill rack? Into a curve shape? From what I've seen they are pretty heavy gauge, solid steel? Did you find a cheap one somewhere? Do the rows have to be a measured distance apart? I guess not or you just found one rack with the right measurements?

What length internal rod is in the 2x 10' clothing rods? Is that functioning as part of the antennae or just support for the grill rack?

Cool stuff. Hope the neighbors 2.4GHz phones still work.

The grill rack wasn't that hard to bend. A buddy of mine with a garage makes stock car part, so he was able to bend it into shape with some heated press do-hicky. It was a cheap gas grill rack. I was able to bend the rows into the proper shape with some pliers after it was shaped. They don't have to be perfectly equidistant or any set distance apart.

The closet rods are 1 1/4" painted aluminum. I put a rubber cap on top to keep water out of it. They do not play any part in transmitting/receiving and are just used to elevate the pole to get line of site to my destination. I have two 12" black iron pipes that are attached together with pipe mounts. I then drilled two holes in each side and inserted machine screws to hold it in place. I'll post pics tomorrow if I get a chance.
