My new uilt computer...no video!!!

Hello everyone. I recently just like four minutes ago built my computer again and i installed everything properly and everything is running correctly but I have no video on my monitor. I turn it on and I get a green light and shortly after, I get an orange light and nothing happens. So I think its the video card but its a brand new retail one. So my question is is there anything i did wrong or what? My specs are:

AMD 2500+ 333mhz retail <works because i hear it processing stuff and i get an orange busy light on my led panel
768 geil dragon ram retail < workes because the 2 lights go on
ati 9800 pro 256mb retail < i think its fine becasue the fans are moving
asus a7n8x deluxe mobo retail < seems to work becasue it starts my computer and onboard leds turn on

So there you go. Everything is new and still no video. I have a warranty for all the parts but I dont want to waste shipping money for no reason. Thank you for all the support. I hope you can help me. I appreciate it. Thankx again.

Boilerplate-01:
. Common causes of failure to boot (no video, no beeps) assuming PSU isn't totally dead:
1- RAM, CPU and/or AGP video card not seated properly, a bent pin or corrosion.
2- Drive data cable on upside down or only on half the pins or shifted a pin or two (usually Floppy or Zip drives).
3- CMOS needs to be cleared (AC power must usually be disconnected or . attempts to clear CMOS may fail) Unless your mobo does not use a power-off CMOS clear - check your mobo manual for specific info.
4- On some new mobos there is a CPU protection feature (esp. on Asus/Asrock Athlon/Socket A mobos) that will not allow the system to start if there is no fan (or a fan without a working speed sensor wire) connected to the fan power connector on the mobo (specifically marked "CPU Fan"). If you tried to start your machine without a fan properly connected, you have to attach a proper and working fan and clear the CMOS before it will boot.

p.s. also check all power connections including the AC cord at both ends.bh.

thanks for the repsonses...

i plugged in everythin again and yes all of the fans work on my computer and the lights are on but my monitor still shows nothing...i tred the monitor on a different computer and it worked....i think its my mobo...any more advice?

try resetting the cmos, although it probably won't do anything since your mobo is new.

is the computer posting? as in, it beeps once, and the keyboard light blinks green then shuts off? if that's the case, it's probably your graphics card.

are you sure you have the monitor in the correct vga port? cuz many new cards have 2 vga ports, or a dvi and a vga.

you might want to try another graphics card in there to try to pinpoint what's wrong. also, try running just 1 stick of ram if you have 2 in there right now.

the other problem may be how your hard drive is connected; is the cable hooked in the right direction? same goes for cd-roms and floppy drives; if the cable is not hooked up perfectly, the comptuer will not boot. period.

thanks everyone...the post isnt reporting and the keyboard lights are not on...is this the mobo? thanks again...I think it is the mobo....I hope i can solve it quickly...thankx again.

ill check the video card on a different system I guess...and thanks again...you guys are very quick...wish me luck on fixing this problem...thanks again...

Let's start from the top. 🙂
  • What brand, model and wattage is your power supply?
  • Is your power supply's slide switch set for the correct voltage for your region (115V/230V)?
  • Is your AGP card fully seated in the AGP slot (how do I tell?)
  • Did you plug the power pigtail from your power supply into your Radeon 9800 Pro's receptacle?
  • What speed are your memory modules rated for?
  • Is your heatsink installed the correct direction? Check your work against this picture.
  • Is your keyboard plugged into the correct PS/2 port (the one closer to the surface of the motherboard, not the "upper" one)?
  • Do you have low-RPM case fans plugged into your motherboard's fan headers (if so, unplug them)?
  • Look at your computer from the rear. Are any of the springy finger things sneaking into the USB or network jacks? (yes = bad)
Answer those as best you can, and let's see where we're at 🙂

what works too...if you have another computer that you can try some of the parts in...its a good way to eliminate certain items that DO work properly...and pinpoint the problem hopefully...just be careful...

Wow...thankx again for all the responses

well i think i found a possible cause for my motherboard's starnage activitiy (fans connected to MOBO turn on and LED's turn on but there is no video...etc...). It seems I have scratched the surface of the MOBO, there are 4-5 wires near the CPU socket (a cm away) with a huge slash going through them. After observing this, I am concluding that the CPU isnt sending the correct electrical output. This wuld couse the post not to work right? And the fans are still working and everything and all seems fine outside the CPU. This sucks really. I do have a warranty but still, I wanted to finish Far Cry. Well if anyone has any suggestions to my conclusion please post. I thank everyone and especially mechBgon for his detailed MOBO and heatsink installation pics. I'll use that screwdriver more carefully I guess. I feel dumb but its okay..for the moment at least. Thanks again, I realy appreciate it.

Bummer about your mobo 🙁 If you're really determined, it might be something you could repair with an automotive defogger-repair kit, to reconnect the traces on the motherboard. But that would be pretty tricky work. Otherwise, you could pick up a new motherboard and swap it in there, I guess. Anyway, good luck!

lol i'm sure it's something simple....make sure your card is correctly seated, its not the mobo its not getting a video signal from the card....take out EVERY but video cpu ram(1 stick) if persists, take outmobo and set it on an anti static pad and boot witih cpu video ram...something isnt hooked up right and oh yeah, just because the fan on the video card works, keep in mind it has NO bearing as it is plugged into the PSU

Plug a speaker into the board. One of the back panel speaker connectors. Not sure which one. Your board has vocal post reporting. It'll tell you what isn't working.

Thankx guys...

I plugged in everything again...and no luck.
I plugged in my speakers and whatnot and i still heard no POST stuff...I used to hear it all the time. It said "post now complete, now booting from operating system" when it was done. I also hear no beeps...i use to get a single beep but i dont get that now. any sggestions?
Does anyone have any thoughts about the scratch on my motherboard?

Thankx again, I do appreciate it.

My initial thought is the power supply. You didn't mention the brand/wattage of your power supply you are using.

Back when I upgraded my computer to a Barton 2500+, my old 300W power supply just wouldn't give me enough juice. I got the fans spinning and so on, and I seem to recall the monitor light going from orange to green then right back to orange.

I connected my system to my wife's 350W power supply and my stuff suddently worked. When I picked up a 400W power supply for my system, my problems were solved.

However, I am a little confused now though. You said you used to hear it post all the time, and now you don't. Explain "all the time". Did you have this motherboard before, and after doing the upgrade you no longer hear it? Or is the mobo new, but on initial tests you get the POST message without the video coming up, then after removing/reattaching everything, you suddenly no longer get the message. Since you mention "finishing Farcry" I'm assuming that you already had a computer before this one. How much of that computer is going into your new computer?

Lastly, regarding the "scratches" - yes, they can certainly be the problem. If you jammed a screwdriver into the motherboard while forcing the HSF onto the CPU, you might have killed the motherboard.
