My new Trinitron and GeForce 2 Ultra

About a week ago I got a NEC MultiSync FE700 Enterprise edition 17" Trinitron monitor. I really like how crisp and clear everything is on it. Yesterday I bought a Creative Labs GeForce 2 Ultra. I've been noticing that the display is kind of wavy. I don't notice it all of the time since it is very faint, but it is there. It is less noticeable than the two damper wires. Is there are way around this?

Makes no difference. Even at 120Hz.

Have you gone into your ouput device setting and changed the Display Timing from Auto-Detect to General Timing Formula or Discrete Monitor Timings?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried both discrete timing and general timing. The discrete timing makes the problem much worse. The waves are visable is just about everything. With general timing, I have to look very very closely to the display to see them. They are almost invisable with the general monitor timings. I can live with it if there is no solution, but if I could totally eliminate the problem that would be better.

Very strange. So, the monitor looked fine BEFORE you put in the GeForce2 Ultra, huh?

What drivers are you using? Try different drivers.

Just download the newest drivers, oh and you could think about ringing the Creative tech support.

gts has a know problem with Trinitron monitors at higher resolutions than 1024x768. same with FD trinitrons. there is no known fix except to remove the RF filters on the actual card.

It sounds stupid, but do you have a mobile or something like that next to the monitor?

I can state with 100% certainty that I do not have a mobile next to my monitor. Before the GeForce 2 Ultra I owned a Voodoo 5 5500. It never exibited this problem. I even tried eliminating everything I could think of that would produce an EMI frequency. No luck there. Still the faint wavey "shimmering" effect. It is very very faint. I have to look closely in order to see it. It would be nice if it were fixed though. In that forum link above they have William Ball from Creative Labs replying to the thread, so they are aware of the problem. Perhaps later on with a BIOS update the problem can be fixed.

GF based boards have problems with trinitron monitors. That's a well known fact.

Welp, today two of the pixels on my new NEC Trinitron burned out. I would expect that happening with an old monitor, but not a new monitor. Since the NEC Trinitron was only a week and 1/2 old I returned it and got a 19" Mag Innovations Pure Flat monitor instead. It's bigger, cost only a little more, colors are more vibrant, has higher refresh rates and resolutions, and (most importantly) does not have the "shimmering" effect with GeForce 2 Ultras. The only gripe I have against it is that the pixels are not as sharp as the Trinitron. Oh well, the other factors make it much better.

I've noticed that this new(er) monitor showed a blurry display at high refresh rates and resolutions. This is a problem with my GeForce 2 Ultra, so I did something about it. I removed some of the RFI circuitry. You can read it here.

With Sony or Trinitron tubes, what you see is what you get. It is a lot like opening a window wider...all the dirt gets in as well. Sony is just getting a bum rap for this as the 200, 400 and 500 series of monitors are some of the best monitors at resolving detail at 1600x1200 and above.
