I did a LOT of looking at statistics when I got my M endorsement, and as long as you aren't a total noob, don't ride drunk or high, wear your helmet and protective equipment, and practice defensive tactics, your risks drop dramatically.
My bike...looks like crap, but it's a starter; I'll be getting a real bike in a few months.
