I'm putting an AMD XP 1800+ and 256 megs Samsung DDR PC2100 on an Asus A7N266. It's an all in one mobo with a Geforce2 LAN & built in sound. I'm getting a black case & black faced Toshiba DVD drive. Not gonna put a floppy in it, never use them so why bother.
I've got some extra 9GB IBM LVD SCSI drives I'll be putting together with an Adaptec 2940U2W controller.
I'm getting a Volcano7 HSF, low noise high CFM. Nice combination!
This is going to make one nice little box for crunching seti and running a few entertaining applications, it's gonna be fun!
My first foray back to AMD since the K6 days... Think I'll see some improvement eh?

Total out of pocket: $280.00
I got the cpu & ram from the Forsale forum here on AnandTech, brand new cpu too!
It's also nice to have a stock of scsi parts just sitting around ;)

Sounds pretty sweet :D

I gotta stop building computers. I really don't need a 5th one, but I can't resist!

Yeah, I am hoping for at least another 6 per day. If I can get 7 or 8 a day I will be extremely pleased. I'll be satisfied with 6 though.
It will be my first AMD Athlon and my first black case. Can't wait for the parts to arrive...

Cool :D I now have 13 of those boards in my work fleet. If you happen to be planning on using Win2000 on it, be aware that it's normal for the video to go out when initially booting from the CD to run Setup. Don't panic, it will resurface at the normal "To set up Windows now..." screen after a few minutes and all's well from there.

'Nother little glitch: the manual pictures the CPU/RAM jumpers upside down, unless they've got revised manuals pumped out by now. Since they come set to 133/133 by default, it's a non-issue with your 1800+.

For the record, people keep saying that the Volcano7 actually is rather noisy even on the low-speed setting, so keep that in mind. If it starts getting to you, you can always go crazy and plop an Alpha 8045 on it, they do fit fine :D

I have an Asus A7V333-RAID and an A7N266-VM like you just ordered, and I use an Adaptec 19160 SCSI card and a SCSI hard drive in my work system. For some reason, the 19160 can't exceed 72Mb/sec throughput on the A7V333-RAID (and only 52Mb/sec if the A7V333's USB 2.0 controller is enabled, figure THAT one out). On the A7N266-VM, however, the 19160 card can burst at over 120Mb/sec! "Dasm!" said mechBgon, and promptly replaced the A7V333-RAID with the little A7N266-VM for the work system. The A7V333-R is now at home busily overclocking my 1600+, which it does fine.

Thanks Mech. I'll file that info away and refer to it when I'm ready to install an OS.
I wonder if there are issues when installing Win XP Pro?

I've been using an Alpha PAL 8035 with the 7K rpm Delta for a couple years, I'm sure the volcano7 will not be this loud.

Any luck overclocking with this mobo? I'm not counting on it since it's an 'all in one', but it would be a pleasant surprise. ;)

Have fun with the AMD wiz. You'll probably notice more heat coming from the CPU area even with whatever fan you happen to wind up with, it is normal, the AMD's run at least 25% hotter than Intels based on wattage, die size and remarks well documented all over the place. Don't sweat it though, they run fine.

If I'm correct and you have the A7N266-VM (the microATX one that I'm using) then no overclocking as far as I can see. For the full-ATX A7N266, maybe somewhat but nForce1 in general isn't known for much OCability.

Thanks guys, yeah I got the manual from the Asus website last night and it says theres just a few jumper choices on the mobo for FSB speeds. I think even running at 133,133 I'll be pretty happy.
I'm going to find that Asus forum and see if there are any ideas over there. (now where was that...)
