My new Seagate 7200.7 80GB SATA(NCQ) HDD is making unbearable noises.

Folks,

Your advice in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Couple days back, I purchased a Seagate 7200.7 80GB SATA(NCQ-enabled) HDD. Since then, it has been giving this weird "metal clacking" sound, and it gets really noticeable during HDD seek operations when the HDD indicator flashes.

Noisy HDD usually means a dying HDD right? Shld I return it back to the shop? RMA it perhaps?

Or is this normal for this model of HDD?

Btw, I ran some seagate diagnostic tools. I partition the HDD into 3 partitions, and out of 3, 2 partitions failed the test!! Help pls.

Many tks!

Rom,

If the drive failed the SeaTool diagnostics, it is indeed bad.
Get it RMA'd ASAP.

Yeah, Seagate drives are known for their wonderful silent operation, so your symptoms definitely mean the drive is going south.

Replace it as soon as you can. 🙂

Did you ever get the drive replaced? I just bought one (7200.7 SATA NCQ), and its ultra quiet most the time, but sometimes when I am working it fairly hard it makes a metal chirp sound like you describe. I am wondering if this is normal or should be replaced. My room mate is also getting one in a few days I am hoping his does it too so I don't have to go through the RMA process, but I would rather do that than have a brand-new failing drive.

Thanks
