I just bought a Sansa e280, as it was advertised as having more capacity, being Windows direct compatable, and being cheaper. Just tried it for a few minutes, and so far so good! My impressions:
*the good*
-nice size/weight.
-showed up immediatly in Windows Vista, both as a seperate file and in Media Player. No drivers required. Just drag and drop songs or folders.
-Plays MP3 and WAV files.
-powerful sound.
-8 GB capacity with option for more via MicroSD card slot.
-under $100.

*the so-so*
-control scema is like a slightly crappy iPod.
-headphones have good sound, but are big enough for an elephant.

*the bad*
-Must be plugged into a PC via USB to recharge. No outlet.
-Cannot use while plugged in. It locks the interface while charging.
-too many seams in construction design, I can see moisture getting in easily if not careful.

Any good ideas for converting files simply? It couldn't use flac, for example.

I have a half-broken one from my girlfriend (4GB e260 model). It's 2 years old I think. I got it after I gave her an iTouch for Christmas. This was has been crushed by her rear because she forgot it was in her back pocket while on a roller coaster >_>

So now its screen has lines running up it kind of like when a camcorder records a CRT television. I also can't seem to get a handle of the interface. Navigating the unit feels like a pain in the ass at times.

On the other hand, I think it sounds better than the iTouch, it's obviously much smaller, and I dont have to use iTunes.. 'Nuff said just for not having to use that god awful system.

Also, my gf gave me one of those cheap AC to USB power adapters with two ports. Costs like $15 and lets me and bro charge my Sansa and his Zen Mosaic at the same time. Would be worth the money if you need an AC outlet around like me. I'm often not around my computer when I need it to charge.

As for audio conversion, dont know what to tell you there, I use Nero MoveIt since I just tell it what to convert it to for the device and it takes care of the rest.

I use an old version of AudioGrabber with LAME codec. For ID3 tagging I use Winamp, whatever the latest version is, then drag and drop to my e280.

For tagging try MP3tag
