So, I thought you all might want to look at my latest project, seeing as I doubt many people have worked with one of these.

It's a Tyan Thunder K8QS Pro (S4882)
4 - Opteron 848's
8 - 512mb
10 - SCSI Segate 36G 15,0000 RPM Hot Swap HD's on a Adaptec 2200s (One array is raid 10 with 6 drives)
3 - 460 Watt Hotswap Power Supplies (Basically it's 2 + 1, so I've got 920 watts with a standby)


Should be a screaming DB server 🙂

i have a buddy that wants the Quad Opteron board... I told him it's far too much for his household needs! LOL

so badass though.... NICE setup!
 
But think of the heat and the noise!

(Sorry, have to say something to cover up my envy). 😉
 
Is 4 gig enough to keep the CPU's from losing time from waiting for the ram to refill under hard loads?

You pansy, I can't believe you didn't get 850s 😀 Sorry, couldn't resist. I too am curious what OS you're gonna run.
 
I will be putting Windows 2003 Enterprise on it because it supports more then 4G's of memory and it support NUMA. It will also be running SQL Sever 2000 Enterprise.

While i don't own them, i've had the pleasure of building a multitude of dualies. it is very awesome to sit surrounded by $10, 000-$15, 000 worth of parts... I'm guessing this was a bit more!

If I may:

How are you achieving RAID 10? HW raid for two stripes and then SW? Not familiar with 2200s; thanks.

oh yeah: where the hell is your backup device? lol

RAID is all hardware, the 2200 supports the following RAID types: 0, 1, 10, 5, 50, JBOD.

As for backups, we purchased 5 - 80G Iomega USB 2.0 external hard drives. One for each business day. It was a fun machine to build. It takes a bit of time for it to sink in that your working with such a high dollar machine.

my AMD 2500+ @ 3200+ speeds will still beat that system in games 😉 😛
your lacking AGP port 😉
