EDIT: Soon after my original posting I managed to fix the problem, I simple uninstalled the Ide controller and rebooted the comp, windows then detected the ide controller and proceded to reinstall it's drivers. Voila my dvd-rom now works. I guess that the ide-controller drivers must not have been properly installed the first time. Unfortunately win98 was not smart enought do detect this.
I've just bought my self a pioneer 106 dvd-rom, as the title says I can't get the thing to work. My first thought was that it was doa. I took it back to the store and got a new one. Unfortunatley I'm having the same problem with the second drive. The second drive might be doa as well even if the odds are against it (I plan to test it in another comp as soon as I can.) But In the mean time I thought that I should ask if anyone on this forum might know what the problem might be.
This is what happens.
1) I boot my computer.
2) Bios detects my dvd-rom as secondary master. (The dvd is alone on the second ide channel)
3) Windows starts.
4) I look in explorer and: No dvd-rom.
5) I look in "controlpanel system" (I think I'm using a non-english version of windows) There I see that there is a problem with my secondary ide controller. However this only happen when I try to use the dvd-rom. if I take it out and replace it with my old cd-rom windows no longer reports that problem. The same thing happenes when I put the dvd-rom as primary slave. In short windows only reports that there is problems with the ide controler if the dvd-rom is the only unit on that channel. This leads me to believe that there is infact nothing wrong with the ide controller.
But if the dvd-rom is working properly and the ide controller is working properly what can the problem be ?
Can it be that my "slighly aged" comp is incompatible with the pioneer 106 ? I have a P3-450 on a MSI-6156zx mobo.
