480 watts ATX powersupply

Go AMD X2 because you would see a better performance for 64 bit computing, because everything was optimized for AMD and not Intel hence the new instruction set iAMD.

I'd take a look at the Dell 9100 and 4700 (and 5100) deals - $480 with 19" LCD monitor (if it's still on sale - if not, wait a week and it'll be back) is hard to beat. Add a few upgrades and the 7800 and you're still under $1400.

They both suck. Don't go cheap on the PSU! However, $50 WILL get you a good PSU. Get the 450W Fortron on Newegg. It's absolutely the best PSU for $50. Go with the EPoX 9nPA+ Ultra/MSI Neo4 Platinum/DFI Lanparty Ultra-D motherboard and an Athlon 64 X2 3800+. Definitely get 2x1GB RAM, as BF2 is much better with 2GB than 1GB. Get value RAM instead of premium RAM, since the memory controller on the Athlon 64 makes the performance difference pretty slim.

that OCZ modstream is way overpriced. You can find more powerful power supplies for much less. And the modstream isn't even OCZ's best brand!

That Jetway SLI board can be had free with an evga 7800gt or gtx video card, if the free deal is still around.

Get a 550W Sparkle power supply if you want to go that extreme, or a Fortron power supply in that range.

here is what I would recommend for him:

athlon 64 san diego - $270
free evga motherboard - cancelled
evga 7800gt - $399
OCZ 2gb - $260
Fortron 450W for $50 or a Sparkle FSP550 550W for $100
Western Digital 250GB - $110

jimmypage13 pick your own case because its all about personal preference

the jetway mobo deal is over. sorry about the PSU. I've learned my lesson. And about that hard drive, the hitachi is 8.5ms, and the western digital is 8.9ms. hitachi is faster.

np 🙂

the Hitachi has NCQ. Very good choice. This is among the best SATA drives out there, I would pick it in a instant.

correct, the deal seems to be over. in that case, yes that Jetway seems good, but if he doesnt need SLI, then the DFI or epox ultra boards are cheaper and have been out on the market for much longer and have thus matured.

thanks Crescent13

Everything looks ehhhh ok i guess.

I would switch to an AMD X2 3800+ with an Epox 9npa+ Ultra motherboard.
The 7800GTX looks good.
You will need to pick out some other type of memory with this setup, I would go with a 512x2 Corsair Value Select kit.
Take a look at the Antec Sonata II case, great case and comes with a 480W Smart Power Antec Power Supply for a great price.

X2 is much greater than pentium anything for photo/video editing. Do a search on this forum for AutoGK, there is a thread that compared our X2's to a phase cooled P4 at 4.4ghz, and the X2 whiped the floor with it. I agree with the sonata II case as well, thats what I am using for my X2 system, it's a nice case, good PSU, and quiet.

Stay away from Powmax anything, unless you want to lose components, I had one and it blew and took out my motherboard with it, stick with Antec, Enermax, Fortron, OCZ, Seasonic if you want to get a good power supply.
