Edit. Any purchase of digital products requires mandatory Pron. For you. Vids?
touche - well done Night: let us know how you like it. I'm in the process of trying to buy a camcorder too. I'm looking at the sony vx-2100 but I've read that the dvc-80 or 100 are very good and probably beat the sony's video and are much better in audio
The audio is better on the Panasonic, but the Sony's are better in low light - they have a lower lux.
The Sony has a 12x optical zoom, the Panasonic has a 10x. The Sony goes to 48x digital, but I don't use digital zooming.
The Sony is about $800 more than the Panasonic. For that price difference, I'd go with the Panasonic and get the 1.6x lense kit to bring the lense to a 16x optical zoom. You'll still come a little under the price of the Sony. The Panasonic is 12-bit - great color and it has I think like 30,000 more effective pixels so the picture should be a little sharper. The 2100 is a great camera, but depending on what you need, I think the Panasonic is a great choice.
What will you be using it for? Don't forget about accessories and warrenty. I use it for professional stuff, so I had to get a new omnidirectional mic for it (I already have a Sennheiser shotgun mic and wireless lavalier and handheld), 5400MAH battery (last about 5-6 hours), 10-pack of tapes, tripod & head, 2-year extended Mack Warrenty, UV protective lense. That's about an extra $800 or so.
I'd go with the Sony if you need better low light filming, otherwise, I think the Panasonics are the way to go.
Let me know if you want any more info or have any other questions.
