My New P3 has 800Mhz FSB, should I put it on Seti?

My P3 1ghz should be here later today or tomarow, and comes with an Intel i820 Mobo and 128Mb 800Mhz Rambus, with that kind of bandwith, I'm thinking I should put this on Seti? I'll have RC5 on it at the same time. I hear Seti is FSB dependent, so I'm thinking i could do some good with tis setup.

(if your wondering why I bought a P3 and Rambus, I got all 3 of the above for $484 shipped)

Good price. 🙂 I would guess SETI would be faster than a standard 800EB on an i815 board, but I'm not really sure. Try it out! 😉

sorry but the FSB is not running at 800mhz, it's just a regular 133mhz bus, and if you look around you'll find that rambus in't much if at all faster than pc-133 ram.

but it's still a nice rig

We would be very interested to see what kind of WU's times you get on that but you'll need to run CLi v3.0 to get WU times that we can compare to ,let us know if you need it.
BTW even though RDRAM has good bandwidth it's higher latencies compared to SDRAM tend to hurt its performance in SETI.
Keep us posted 🙂

Whatever is going on with the memory, it will still totally kick ass doing SETI compared to my K6-2-350 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just test it for a few days please !!!

🙂🙂

As Assim1 said the latency of rambus really hurts it's seti performance. Try it out though & give us the low down.🙂

pc800 rdram does run at 800mhz, its just 16 bits wide compared to sdram's 64bits. so its 8x the mhz of pc100, but 1/4 the width, which is why pc800 rdram has twice the bandwidth of pc100, 1.6 GB/s compared to 800 MB/s. i'm for ram speed being measured in bandwidth terms myself, since the average consumer comparing pc133 to pc800 is going to think that pc800 is 6x faster, when its not. heck, since the fsb of the p3 is only 1.1 GB/s the extra bandwidth of rdram is kinda wasted.

I say go for it! I'll bet it does SETI just fine. I've got 8 HP Kayak machines at work with a 600EB and 128MB RAMBUS. They are easily my fastest work PC's and seem to do SETI pretty well. I think they average about 6 hrs/WU. Also, they're running NT4 Workstation.
