My new Maxtor just died

I bought a 120 Gig about 2 months ago. I just upgraded my system and put all of my files I wanted to save on this new maxtor. Wouldn't you know it the SOB won't work now. I have my important files on cd but I had a lot of downloaded updates and such on the drive. Man i am so pi$$ed right now. This thing just makes a buzzing noise during the bios. When it is primary channel on master the bios reports hard disk fail. Maxblast software won't pick it up either.

Anyone have any ideas to try before I send this junk back. I did the freezer trick already without success. It was making some clicking sounds last night but I have the case open right now and thought nothing of it. Now I am kicking myself for not moving files then.

Thanks for input.

is it the S.M.A.R.T. test that's reporting the drive failed, or can the BIOS just not pick it up at all? If it's the former, I suppose there's some slight possibility that a program like ERD Commander can recover the data, but I kind of doubt it, especially since Maxblast won't pick it up.

It might be worth disabling SMART in the BIOS and seeing if that does anything.

Thanks for the reply. The bios cannot pick it up at all. I think smart is disabled in the bios. I didn't turn it on at least. I will reboot and check.

Edit/ I just rebooted and checked the bios for smart cabability. I couldn't find anything in the bios. I just upgraded last week. my old board had it evidently this one doesn't have it.

I guess I am up a creek without a paddle.
