I was able to buy a compaq presario 1700t, notebook for a good price on the forsale forum.
I also own a hp pavilion laptop... here is my mini review
the compaq had these specs
celeron 600, 192mb ram, 6 gig drive, 14" screen , dvd, and weighs 5.8 pounds
my old laptop was
p3-850, 256mb ram , 10 gigs, 13.3" screen, dvd and cdrw, and 7.3 pounds
anyways, i also have a spare 800mhz cpu laying around that i forgot to sell
first off, the p3-850 wouldnt work in the compaq, since the bios wouldn't recognize it and would only run at it 700mhz battery mode. luckily the 800mhz worked, so i am using that.
the compaq, is much lighter, but there are some bad things. they keyboard isnt as good. also the wristrest on it heats upon the left side because of the hitachi hard drive. i am thinking new ibm deskstar. also since its so thin, its kinda flimsy feeling on the screen. the hp was way more rigid and wouldn't flex. i swapped the ram from the two machines, and win xp seems to run fine, though during the install screens there were 3 vertical lines on the screen flickering, which made me think the lcd was broken, but they arent there during normal use. wierd. Also the rage mobility 8mb vid card sound much better than a s3 savage ix 4mb in my hp. But so far, i'd say it sucks ass , as it is about 40% the speed of the savage in q3a.
i am gonna keep the compaq it seems, just because its lighter., hopefully i made the right choice.
