My new knife is here!

Got it for about $35. Feels well-built and very balanced. The blade is teflon-coated. I'm not sure how that makes it better (and $2 more expensive) than a silver-blade knife, but I liked the look much better.

I'm the last person to ever get in a knife fight. I have to cut open packages a lot at work and wanted something other than the cheap Victorinox-knockoff knife I've got now.

Not sure which is better...IMHO, any knife in the $30-$70 range will be about the same. Once you get into the >$100 range, that's where small differences come into play.

But then again, I'm no expert.

If you never want to buy another knife again, buy a Benchmade. I have 3 and plan to start getting more to collect an entire set. The Mel Pardue series is nice as is the Osborne series. I am a fan of Osborne's knives more than any other though. The entire 94x series rocks.

carbon steel: http://www.efunda.com/materials/alloys/carbon_steels/carbon.cfm

just a type of alloy, generally very strong. most sprockets/gears/chain are carbon steel.

High carbon steel means it is a type of steel that holds a very sharp edge. It also tends to rust.

The link in my sig has some knife forums. These guys can help noobs find good knives. Personally, I would recommend something from Microtech, Chris Reeve Knives, or even Benchmade. Lot's of price variations but like everything else in life... you get what you pay for mostly and good knives are rarely cheap.

P.S. The Uzi knife is superior to the S&W Swat knife although the Swat knife is a decent cheap knife and about perfect for what the original poster said he was gonna use it for. :thumbsup:

Believe it or not a knife is a tool. Like the other guy said, I wanna see you eat steak without a knife. 😛

Whatever you do, dont get in a fight with some body with that cheap little knife. When you stab them in the chest, the knife will hit the rib bones and your hand will slid up the blade cutting you hand wide open.
Get one that doesnt open and has something between the handle and blade to press against.
