i recently purchased a hard drive at best buy. a 20gig 5400 maxtor. and it is by far the loudest o ne i have ever heard. i can hear it on the other side of the house. it sounds almost like its grinding metal. so i took it back for one just like it and it does the same thing. of the 15+ hard drives i have purchased this is by far the loudest. its actually as loud as all of them put together.

why is this? why did maxtor make such a horrible hard drive? its past the 14 day take back period so i can't take it back to best buy. but i never use this hard drive now. why is it so damn loud?

i found this on the box, i suppose one is the model #'

KIT: ko12020gh
S/N: b172pwqe

couldn't find anything else.

think you got some bad drives.....i have two maxtors, a 20 and a 60 gb. both run at 7200 rpm, which means they should be louder than that 5400 rpm because it is spinning slower.

All I know is it's teh luck of the draw with Maxtors. I've bought two but have had seven, all returns from the two I bought. I ended up with two quiet ones out of seven, that's been my experience with Maxtor. My suggestion is to return the drive to Maxtor, they have a great RMA department, as I'm sure they get a lot of practice.

i didn't say outside. i said the other side of the house. also is amazing that 2 in a row are this horrible.
