I nearly passed out on a roller coaster years ago on the drop. After the drop my vision started to go black but then a few seconds later it started to come back. It was a very odd feeling.

When I got off the ride I overheard the people who sat right in front of me talking about how they almost blacked out too. We were in the very first car, but I was in the second row.

It was a ride known for having a very high G force on the drop and is one of the highest/fastest ones on the east coast.

EDIT:

Wow a quick google search shows they actually made modifications to try and adjust for people experiencing it.

I do believe I went after 2010 though, so this was post modifications and I still experienced it.

From Wikipedia:

The park's goal was to reduce the number of blackouts some riders were experiencing.

That sounds like the opposite of what you'd want to do! :D

Side note, are there any adverse health effects to graying-out/blacking-out on a rollercoaster?

Two tricks:

1. Clench your gut (i.e. flex your abs - similar to a bowel movement push, but higher up in your stomach - it's a trick you can practice doing & holding for periods of time)
2. Scream (or yell)

Check out the Hook Maneuver:

If you watch the other videos of the Slingshot ride, the people who do pretty well either scream (and enjoy it!) or tense up (stress their muscles) for the ride ahead. The people who just grip the bars really get whacked upon launch, lol. So next time you go on a ride, right before you hit a high-G part, either flex & hold your abs tight, or take in a deep breath & yell loudly (or, you know, scream, haha!). I do the ab-clench trick because it prevents my vision from going into tunnel-mode. Kinda like putting a cork in your veins to push the blood back up to your eyeballs, hahaha.

I was definitely yelling/screaming when I went down the drop, I remember thinking that may have had something to do with it because I wasn't breathing any air in while dropping.

Yeah, I learned both tricks from pilots. Some of those guys, especially fighter jet pilots & stunt pilots, have to do some really crazy stuff in the air! Check out Sean D. Tucker if you've never seen one of his amazing aerial performances...he even narrates his routines!
