my new duron 1600

jhu

two weeks ago i went to the chicago fry's and found this nice deal for a socket a motherboard and memory for about $15 after rebate. pretty sweet, so i got a duron 1600 which just came 2 days ago. and then came the moment i really hate: putting that fvcking heat sink on! why the hell do these things have to be on so tight? i get rather nervous when the motherboard bends more than a few millimeters. at least the computer still works.

The good news is the P4 and A64 have done awy with difficult to install, potentially damaging designs and made it uberEZ now 🙂 For sktA the AeroFlow was the easiest one to install I used.

Just be careful, make sure the heatsink isn't backwards, and use a steady hand and you'll be fine.

hey, i just figured out that holding the heatsink up while pushing the clip down doesn't bend the motherboard as much.

$15 eh? you can get that applebred to pull 2.2ghz if you want. that would be hands down the most amazing bang for the buck computer ever for $15 🙂

actually, it's more like $55 since the processor did cost about 3x more than the motherboard and memory. hmm... and i can sell the old motherboard, cpu, and memory...

haha I remember my first socket A heatsink, I felt like I was going to break the table the mobo was sitting on. After that tho, things are much easier. BTW, nice find, i've been wanting to build a Duron system for myself, just for kicks 🙂

i have some povray benchmarks. they're much faster than my old celeron 800. they even beat my dad's celeron 2ghz by 33%. what i find interesting is that the gcc compiled binaries beat the icc binaries. it was vice versa on my celeron.
