My New Desk

As you look at it in the pic, it looks smaller than it is (what my family told me)....

On the top shelf is a Epson 880 and a full legal sized HP Scanjet 4c.

My monitor is 19".

My tower is about 28" high.

The desk surface is 30" deep, and the right book shelf is 30" deep also (the limit I had to work with, I'd have loved 36")....the right bookshelf is 12" shelves and 7'9" high.

The left shelf is 48" deep and 12" shelves, it's 6' tall.

Under the desk behind my tower is my APC SmartUPS1250 on a shelf, above it which you cannot see is a ISOTEL 8 handling non-UPS requirements.

I will be building in some 'under the top shelf' lighting....the desk surface is white tileboard, a nice surface and a 4'x8' sheet was only $10....formica would have been better but $40.

my total cost was $150....that included a hole saw kit to drill 1"-2.5" holes (about 8 saws in the kit).

My New Desk

Well the screws exposed I sort of like...it fits my decor (mexican tile and a very casual feel)....

I actually ripped the sides off a few 2x4x12' boards to cut and cover the screws but it looks good in my place without the covers.

Nice... I like the white tileboard. But don't you feel like you're up against the wall to the right a bit much ?

Nice job, and nice printer (I have one, it does great photos considering how old it is, and that it's not a photo printer specifically). :)

I need to build a desk, but have the my-parents-have-two-cars-and-neither-has-a-trunk(boot)-big-enough-to-fit-any-decent-sized-pieces-of-wood-in issue. :(

Why do you need three desk lamps and a overhead clippy lamp ? Those magazines stacked below the desk, old time porn collection by chance.

there are only two desk lamps...my 19" monitor blocks most of the light the one on the left sheds. The overhead was my wife's request....

I plan on 3-5 under shelf low watt halogens in the future.

In regards to the right side....it actually opens to my bathroom :) I sit almost 3' from that opening so it's not an problem...if it were a wall there I would probably feel a little cramped.

The magazines below my desk are now: Computer Shopper, PC Mag, Time, PC World, Stuff, FHM, GQ, Playboy, Catalogs to various companies, Gear, W, Car and Driver, Sport Compact Car, etc.

I had at one time had so many 'gray area' type mags it was obscene, plus pretty cool logs of various 80's and 90's 'things'...however a hurricane killed them all including all the AppleTalk mags and like ones from inception :(.

I am a pack rat.

I am just busting your balls on your magazine collection :D . I still see three desk lamps. Two to the left of your monitor and one to the right. By the way good job. You built a functional workspace for next to nothing. I would do the same but I always run into the wife acceptance factor on such maters.

Nice job! I like big, sturdy furniture. Judging by how many piles of books and magazines and equipment you've got there, you obviously built that thing to take a beating and then some! :Q

I like your desktop surface...snazzy looking. :) I happen to like the look of the exposed screwheads; very industrial/mission style looking. ::)

You have a light satin-type stain on there, right? You also must have a tablesaw; those boards are too straight to have been done freehand...unless you're REALLY good w/tools.

My father has a table saw and a new radial arm we tested with this project. Some was cut with a portable jigsaw, circular saw, and hand saws. No stain on any of the wood. It's all #2 Whitewood (spruce) 1" thick. I have built several bookcases only of this wood and it really holds up.

I think the third desk light some people are seeing is my wife's cdr blanks (sort of looks like a little white desk lamp).

The nice thing about this is we can both work at the same time when needed....it's a small apartment so it's important to really use all the space we have the most effiecient way and at the same time not crowd our selves. This desk left over half of the room available, I now have my 32" toshiba TV and a nice entertainment stand I built (using 2" pine this time) It's about 26" deep and 30" high and ~38" wide...it had a center divider, the width was choosen so it allows a full sized A/V unit (17" wide) to sit on each side of the center divider. There is one shelf on each side that I built to slide out. When all the components are in place there will be about 4-5" on each side on top for breathing room. I will also probably add a drawer in the sections below the components. Right now I just needed something to put all this stuff :)

Here is a quick pic: My TV Console

Like my computer desk cables have not been tied up and routed yet....I don't have everything in place.
