I got the Asus mobo yesterday and last night tried to get it hooked up.
I'm typing to you today from my old BX (BH6) system.
I've installed, reinstalled, configured and worked on NT and Win2K a lot of times, so you would think I would have learned a few things by now...
I blame it on this killer head cold I have, but here's the stupid thing I did:
Shut down Win2K normally after a nice uneventful session
gut out my computer case - remove BH6 mobo & all cards incl. 2 ISA cards
Mount CUSL2-C mobo
Hook up all cards - except ISA cuz no ISA slots, had extra PCI NIC so I put it in in place of 1 ISA NIC, no place to put old ISA 56k modem - left it out too
Get everything put together and try to power up.
Play with BIOS settings, can't get system to go above 904mhz with my pretested P3 700e
Set it at 700 mhz and try to boot.
Blue Screen - 'INACCESSABLE BOOT DEVICE'
futz around with it a bunch, cant boot.

11:45 pm and feeling lousy, went to bed.

9:00 am got up with major headache, 1500 mg tylenol and 1 actifed

11:00 am decided to put BH6 board back in while I still remembered the order I had the PCI cards
Ok, I got it all put back together and it booted fine.
Now I am thinking I need to tell the system I don't have those ISA cards any more, but I am not sure what to do about the different HDD controller in there. The way I have WIn2K installed is with NTFS
so that makes things difficult if it won't boot.
I am thinking about going in and removing devices and then letting the system find new ones next time I boot up with the new mobo.
Of course if that doesn't work it may be unbootable with either system.
I am not sure so I will wait and see if anone here has any advice before proceeding.

You'll need to "reinstall" win2k with the cusl2, since you're changing ata-controllers.

I dont' know of a way around this, but I had to do this when I swithced from VIA133A to i815E.

Seriously? What about this idea:
Remove the current controller (I don't know if it will let me do this)
Install the Asus controller driver (I don't know if I can do this)
and then put it back together with the ASUS mobo?
(I really don't want to have to reinstall all my software)

Really, the best way is to do a reinstall. There is enough difference between the BX chipset and the i815E chipset to warrant a full reinstall and redetection of hardware.

Uninstalling the controller may or may not work... As AndyHui says, reinstall is probably best.

Just boot from your Win2K CD and do a repair, then re-apply the service packs. This will clean out any old reg settngs.

That sounds like a good idea, I will try it. Thanks Tweakin!

I decided to go ahead and leave my celeron 300a @ 505 in the bh6 mobo and pretty much leave that system intact. I was going to use it to upgrade my wifes system anyway.
I had an adaptec 29160 controller and a Quantum 36 gig U160 drive here so I decided to go ahead and put together a whole new system. The 36 gig is formatting now...
I still have the P3 700e fcpga running with the GORB, as I didn't have so much time to play around with the Alpha right now while building the whole new system.
I figure this way the wife gets an upgrade from Win98 to Win2K pro, I get an upgrade to Win2K AS (which I have had but not wanted to install yet) and I can pretty much put together another whole low end system with what's left over. Now her machine will be the print server, ICS and all that and mine can just be dedicated to higher pursuits
