My new cpu installed computer won't boot!

hi,
I had a AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz. I just bought an OEM Athlon XP 2100+ and installed it into my Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mobo. When I turn on my computer, it powers for about 5 seconds and then just shuts back down. The monitor doesn't even have enough time to come on and the CD has just started to spin. On.... off. no error no beeps no nothing. I put my other cpu back in and it works. Of course, it did slow down from a 1.2 Ghz to a 900... .don't know exactly why, how, or what is going on here. The BIOS did stop me when I put my old one back in saying that htere was a change in cpu or change in cpu speed... sure enough that is when i noticed it was at 900 instead of 1.2.

1)Why did my 1.2 all of a sudden change to a 900
2) Why won't my 2100+ even boot?

Any help would be great!

1.2>900 can be explained
fsb reset itself from 133 to 100 times the mult (9) giving you 900mhz

the 2100+ wont boot, meaning it tunrs on for a few seconds and turns off becuaes its probably detecting a cpu overheat and shutting down so that the cpu doesnt fry...what heatsink is it?

its a brand new heatsink that works fine on my other cpu.
Thermaltake Volcano 6cu

ps. so I can just change the frequency back to 133 to atleast get to 1.2?

The #1 cause of CPU-overheat shutdowns is a reversed heatsink. Make sure the stepped end of the heatsink's base is oriented to match the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket.

I think I've probably typed the above advice about 1000 times... so far 😀

INSTALLATION FOR Volcano Series (5, 6Cu, 6Cu+)

BTW, this heatsink is only rated up to 2100+. It would be in your best interest to get a better HS, if you plan to overclock. 😉

Attach a speaker to your MB (light green plug) and there should be a female voice telling you what is wrong. Good luck!!!!

its not on long enough for the voice to tell me what is wrong. It is really only on for about 5 seconds and hten it shuts down... the monitor does'nt even come on

and I have the heatsink connected correctly as far as i can tell. it worked fine on the other one.

is overheating the only possible problem?

Hey there I had a simular problem with my 2100+ REV B chip and my volcano7+ if you are using a copper shim you may not be making good contact to the chip try removing your shim and reinstall you HS with a fresh coat of artic silver also make sure you HS is positioned correctly as another member mentioned above.

Good Luck,

yeah, u did use thermal grease right?
i think 2100+ makes more heat than 1.2 tbird (but not 100% on that..) so it could be an overheat issue

maybe try clearing the cmos before you try to start up with the 2100+

5 seconds sounds like maybe your MB is shorted to the case near the PSU switches. also check for stuck buttons on the case.
