Coming from a AMD 3200+ XP, 1G DDR400, Sapphire 9800Pro. Built an Intel Quad 6600, 2G DDR2 1066, 8800GT and 10k Raptor HDD. No issues under normal browsing/surfing, but throw in a game and it struggles to even keep up with my old rig. Installed the classic Unreal 2004, and with all settings ON LOW, some levels studder so much they're un-enjoyable. That game isn't even THAT demanding! WTF!
 
Well you ofcourse know, as well as the rest of us, that build should have no problem with that game, and will destroy your old comp.

Did you install the latest nvidia drivers?
 
Nvidia drivers, motherboard drivers, sound drivers, etc.

What do your temps look like? What's your CPU usage during the slowdowns?
 
Also double check your BIOS settings re: CPU and memory and make sure everything is set appropriately - you can't always rely on things to auto-detect properly. What board are you using by the way? And what OS are you running?
 
Enable V-Sync in the graphics control panel? Make sure you try different videocard driver versions and check cpu/mobo and gpu temperature.

Make sure the heatsink on the cpu is seated properly/thermal paste was applied correctly.
 
First thing to do is unplug the computer from the power and press the power button to ground the system.

Take out the memory and the video card and reinstall them, make sure you insert them all the way into the slots.

If that doesn't help, it could be one of the following:

- Power supply is not powerful enough
- Windows is not installed properly
- Video card is faulty
- Memory is faulty

You might want to do a Prime95 torture test, it will tell you if the memory is defective.

video card faulty=crash or corruption
memory faults=crash

slow is something else.

I'd recommend using Memtest instead of Prime95 to test memory.

Anyhow, I think it would be a good idea for you to give a complete list of your computer's specs OP.

I've seen bad video cards and PSU that make the computer slow and unresponsive.

I personally had a memory that seem to work fine but slowly corrupted my hard drive.

What you said is the worst things that happen with bad psu and bad video card.

 
yea but how can a bad psu make a computer run slow? a psu that can't output enough power automatically restarts as a safety feature.
as for memory that worked fine..did it pass memtest?
i have serious doubts about most slow down blame on hardware. unless a drive is in pio mode or the cpu is throttling generally its not hardware
 
No, some video cards will throttle if they don't have enough power. There was a thread on it somewhere in Video cards.
 
UT2k4 has issues with the 8x Nvidia cards under XP. They're fine in Vista, but many people having been having stuttering problems with XP. Try some non UT2-2.5 engine games and see if you still have issues. It may just be an incompatibility with UT.
 
theres some issues with the unreal engine games on winxp, try an older driver, I remember reading a thread about this somewhere in AT.
 
is it only that game? its probably the NVIDIA driver.. they're pretty bad in that dept.

try a complete uninstall of it with driver cleaner in safe mode. and reinstalling the latest, or another official STABLE version
 
Ok. I verified that the 6 pin power plug was in place on the video card. I played a little Crysis yesterday. Played ok I guess. I also download and installed the latest drivers from nVidia and I just ran 3DMark06 Advanced Edition.

12115 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score 4942
HDR/SM3.0 Score 5224
CPU Score 3833

Are those scores reasonable for what I have? I don't know what that compares to. The biggest thing that worried me was while the CPU tests were running, average FPS was roughly 1.5fps. I realize it's a CPU test and not a graphics test, but the video was barely even running. Is that normal?

Those scores sound OK. The framerates on the CPU test are supposed be to very low.
