If I recall, African cichlids will destroy live plants.

that is what I have read as well...

wasnt really planning on plants anyway....I love watching the fish in this tank...they are always darting around looking for food...when I walk near the tank, they all swim up to the top, expecting to get fed...

i am waiting to see if one of them will try to become the dominant fish in the tank...so far I haven't seen anything yet, but who knows what happens when I am not looking...

these guys are pretty territorial...lots of hiding places in the tank which is what they need...

My 55 gallon aquarium has both African and South American cichilids in it. They do well together if you have the water just right.

They have completely different water needs. South American cichlids need low pH and African cichlids needs high pH.

So I've been told, but I have both kinds living happily for the past 5 months.

South American cichlids are much more tolerant of ph than the Africans are or seem to be.
