My 'new' car is already costing me lots and it's not even on the road yet

just found out i have a tiny hole in the floor pan above the cat, needs brake lines from front to back, has a leaking tranny seal, and the oil pan is about to rust through(though i expected this, it's common on 4.6's) although i did find out i have airbag suspension in the rear, which is pretty cool. So much for my crown vic staying nice and cheap :| anyone else have problems with their 'new' used cars?

also, has anyone ever done full brake lines on a crown vic(93)? I'm contemplating borrowing a bay at work during a slow day and doing the lines myself with the help of a friend, or it'll be $350 of labour to get a tech to do it

i've had some troubles too. i had to put on a new cat-back exhaust, replace basically everything in the ignition system, cv joint boots, and a timing belt in the last 8 months plus a vavle job that is getting done over winter break

that's true... i also found out it has automatically leveling air suspension in the back, it's so cool :) no pics yet unfortunatly. I am going to stick a wading pool in the back this summer and drive around town with people in it :D

Whew, floor rusted through, brake lines gone and oil pan too! How the hell does an oil pan rust through? :confused:

Brake line is cheap, but you'll probably need wheel cylinders in the back, flexible line over the rear axle, proportioning valve... hell, might as well throw a $25.00 master cylinder in there while you're at it! Ugh. Hope you have access to that repair manual, so you can order all that stuff and pick it up in one trip. Hmmm, don't forget your flaring tool and tubing cutter... oh, and a torch to bust loose the frozen bolts on those wheel cylinders. Cripes, you may need calipers too, if those fittings won't come out in one piece. Might as well lube the wheel bearings on the front spindles and put new pads and shoes on, too. What about a spring kit for the rear brakes? Just trying to save you a trip!

I count on used cars needing work, and brakes are nothing to compromise on, but that poor buggy sounds like it was sitting in a salt bath or something!

Do it on your own if you can save $350
thats alot of money man for shyte sakes!!!

My wife's car since we got it in August of 00 has needed a brake job, a/c unit repair, wiper fluid hose, and 2 defective tires replaced.
Mine we got new in March of 01 so all it's needed in 24k is an airbag sensor.

it's disks in the back so i don't have to worry about springs and cylinders. And oil pans rust through here because of all the salt they dump on the roads(i'm in ottawa) the car has never been undersprayed so i'm surprised it has as little rust as it does being 9 years old and all. if it were summer i'd do it myself in my friend's garage, but it's too damn cold already to do something like this outside, and i don't know anyone with a heated shop. That and i have a severe shortage of time between school and work. It would be $350 because of labour, parts are only ~50. This is the reason i was trying to find a car in the summer, i'd have the time to fix it and wouldn't get frostbite in the process ;)

the ontario government uses salt here like it's free. you won't find many cars on the road older than 88 or so because most fall apart from it. It has fairly little rust on it except for the oil pan and driveshaft, which surprised me because it had never been undercoated. If you stop over at crownvic.net you'll see quite a few people have problems with rusty oil pans. On a side note, does anyone know how many liters of ATF the AODE tranny holds(not draining the torque converter)

Damn. That's kinda crappy. Too bad we can't figure out a better ice melter.. that isn't corrosive.

Oil pan rust trough on these cars is caused by a poor power coating process at the vendor. The power coat doesn't full bond to the metal causing a gap. Water and/or salt from the roads can get in and cause a rusted oil pan condition.

Changing the oil pan on those cars is difficult, I believe you have to remove the engine. Let me check...

Nope I was wrong you don't have to remove the engine, PM if you want the procedure.

Thanks for asking about my cars, the Mercedes and Escort are doing fine.

FLUID CAPACITY = 12.9 Liter with convertor
Just changing the pan gasket/filter is around 4-5 quarts here in the states.
