I've always been fascinated by technology, but I had my first taste of GPS technology today and wow oh WOW! :) I'll never be lost again. I bought a Belkin Bluetooth GPS receiver for my car (also reviewed here) for my iPAQ 4155 for $200 (including software and maps).

I loaded up maps for North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, D.C. and Maryland on my 512MB SD card and sat got in my car. I synced both of them up via the Bluetooth connection manager and was up in running in less than a minute. It got a fix on my position right away and showed my exact location. I pulled away from the parking space and started down the road and it started displaying the streets along with my speed. I entered in a destination, and the pleasant voice started calling out directions for me and even signaling ahead that there was a turn approaching. If I deviated from the intended course, it automatically recalculated for me on the fly...too cool ;) It even showed me some shortcuts along my normal driving through Raleigh that I didn't even know about:)

I've got one of these car mounts on the way so I should be all set :)

I was on the verge of buying an iPAQ the other day and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Is there anything you can really DO on it that is productive and not just *cool*?

Seems like a really expensive Palm that does a lot more stuff, but none of that stuff is really useful past WOW factor.

Well, I don't have a laptop, so I carry around my iPAQ everywhere I go. It's a "walking" connected organizer. I used it this weekend in a 802.11b hotspot to take care of some "business" while I was away from my home computer:

(1) Received all my emails and answered them
(2) Managed my eBay auctions (sent invoices, answered questions from sellers, listed 4 items).
(3) Cancelled an order from Buy.com
(4) Placed an order from OfficeDepot
(5) Answered two PM's on the Anandtech forums.
(6) Chatted on AIM and ICQ
(7) FTP'd two pictures to my FTP account

And that's just stuff that I did over the integrated WiFi this past weekend

From Belkin's online store. They had it for $399 - 50% off coupon, no tax. Now they have it for $299, no coupon

?? I already have a 19" Planar LCD monitor, so I don't need another.

I've had my iPAQ 4155 since october, so I've already gotten plenty of use out of it. This addition just makes it even more worthwhile.

You can pick up a good "mouse" GPS for around $100 (must be attached to your Axim with a cable)...but you must buy the software which is gonna run you another $90 or so for Mapopolis or Deluo Routis.

So I said, for another $10, might as well spring for the Belkin Bluetooth GPS since it comes with the hardware and software (Deluo Routis based) and doesn't require any cables.
