Well it maybe damaged or hopefully, just not properly mounted in the case 100% I have a Antec 1080AMG Soho Case with the included Antec True Power 430W PS. I also have a ABIT IC7 w/ Bios 1.13; P4c 2.4 NOT-Overclocked;Kingston Hyper X PC3500 512MB X2; Zalman AlCu 7000 @ 2400 Rpm 92mm Fan (This you can barely hear); A Enermax 80MM Intake fan, set to low speed, you can hear, but very, very quite; Two Rear Antec Case fans that were included 80mm connected to the 'Fan Power' plugs so they are on lower power feed to the PS. Anyway, The PS is rather LOUD in the system. It is about the same db level or a bit louder, as my old File Server, P3 based system before. This is concerning me greatly. I?m wondering if the PS has a worn Ball Bearing, or maybe damaged or something. But I can boot into windows, no Prob. and I have not had any lockups or anything.

A few things to note: The True PS seems to be 'under-volting' the Power Rails in the MB Bios. These are the #?s I got out of the BIOS screen:

CPU Core 1.48V
DDR 2.57V
AGP 1.53V
ATX +3.3 Volts 3.24V
ATX +5Volts 4.91V
ATX +12Volts 11.73V

Battery Voltage +3.3V 3.26V
Standby Voltage +5V 4.96V

Could it just be the MB Bios reporting False Voltage numbers? BUT what about my PS, does anyone think I should RMA it, or is there anyway I can ?fix? the sound problem?

Thanks

Perhaps you have something loose or misaligned inside the PSU case that's resonating.

Ill check that out; and then get back to ya. Thanks for the tip. BTW do you have the same PS? I was pretty stunned that the PS was louder than all of my Case/CPU/MB fans!

Thanks

Okay everyone, I finally figured out the Prob. And thank GOD its nothing to do with neither my Case NOR the True Power Supply!!! Whew!! I have two IDE ATA drives, 1. A New WD 120G 8MB Cache SE I got about 3 weeks ago. 2. A Maxtor 60G 2MB Cache Drive that I bought in June 2001, w/ Manufacture date of 25 Nov 2000. The Maxtor Drive is about 95% of my Prob, and I suspect it will FAIL in a few months or weeks if I'm really unlucky. (The other 5% I think, is to just make sure no cables are leaning up against anything, causing resonance. I might get some rubber pads, and strategically place them in the HD bays)

The Maxtor Drive sounds like is has a really loud, worn ball bearing on one of, or all of the drive spindles? Or something, as when I disconnect the drive's power from the whole system it is, extremely quite. But when I plug the power cable back into the drive, it vibrates when I hold it in my hand, and it emits a very loud 'whirring' sound. I suspect the drive is close to failure, as it was no way near this loud when I first got it,

Anyone have any idea if I can RMA this drive. It came with a 3 year Warranty, which is still good for another 5 months or so. BUT, will Maxtor ONLY replace the drive if I get the 'Click of Death' and I can't boot into it? I know it will fail soon, but it has not yet.

Anyone have an idea on this about RMA'ing the drive, or getting a replacement for a 'worn spindle motor bearing.' Thanks

I've done an RMA on a Maxtor drive that was vibrating really bad. It was actually a drive that came back from RMA and it vibrated really bad but otherwise worked fine. Maxtor accepted the RMA and replaced it with one that was fine. If you aren't sure, or the online RMA doesn't accept it, call Maxtor. They used to promote their "No Quibble" warranty policy.

ZIP, I called Maxtor and they insisted I use ther PowerMAX 4.06 Drive diagnostic utility. Well I did, and the drive passed all tests without any errors reported. But I still know very soon that the drive will get the 'Click of Death.' But the sound is driving me INSANE!! ZIP, did you do the Advanced or Standard Warranty RMA? How long did it take to get the new drive?

Thanks

I'm assuming ZIP=Zap...

I usually do the Advanced RMA. I get the drive quicker, plus I then have a handy box that meets the shipping requirements.

Yeah, I meant ZAP.

Well I did choose the Advanced RMA option, so hopefully I'll have one by mid next week. The only thing I was bummed out about, was I read in my RMA e-mail is that the replacement drive I will get next week will be a 're-certified' drive. I really hope this one isn't of inferior quality compared to say what one would get if they go out and buy a new Retail Boxed Maxtor Drive? I would really hate to have to RMA a RMA'ed drive!!

Another thing that would be nice, is to get a replacement drive with 8MB cache, as this one has 2MB. But I shouldn't get my hopes up as I think that Maxtor still sells the model that I have.
