I am looking to build a new system from scratch (I am currently on a X2 4200), for my wife (Photoshop Elements + Premiere Elements for family/travel video and photo editing) and me (games, waiting for Starcraft II, Diablo III, next episode of Half-Life). My monitor is 22 inch. I leave in Canada, my budget is 1000, max, cdn (because we have to add the taxes, that means around $1150). I will do no overclocking or SLI/Crossfire.
Here is my choice, at the moment, but your comments might change things... Taking into consideration that putting more money on a component (for instance the CPU) means putting less money on another.
CPU : AMD Phenom X4 955 : the alternative would be the more powerful I5, but here in Canada, the I5 is around $40 more than the 955 (and the 955 is $200). I am also interested in the long run, which the am3 socket seems to offer more than the Intel one... But, do I loose very much on the performance front ? Is the performance difference worth the price ? Or would it be wiser to buy a tri-core AMD CPU to save money ?
Motherboard : ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO : I chose this one because it is the one that my computer seller propose me. I am looking for a good mobo, but no need to do overclocking. So, is there a big difference in quality among the different mobo of the big companies (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.). I do not want to pay for things I would not use (for instance, an integrated videocard). What would be a good but cheap one, that maybe will be able too receive a 6-core in 2 years ?
GPU : ATI 5770 : I read that it is less powerful than the 4870, but DirectX11 compatible. Here, they are the same price. So, with my 22inch monitor, do I loose too much performance with this choice, knowing that directx11 will not be useful before some times ? Or is it a good long run strategy ?
Case + PSU : Sonata III with 500W PSU (Antec) : It seems that this case is quiet (which is a big plus for me) and comes with a good PSU. Not a very big one, that's sure, but It seems to be big enough for now, and even for an upgrade... The alternative would be the Antec 300, but I would have to buy a PSU, and so the total price would be around the same as the Sonata III. Is one of the 2 cases much better than the other ? Is 500W too small ?
Memory : KVR1333D3N9K2/4G : Once again, the choice of my computer specialist. But I have the impression that Kingston makes good memory... Am I wrong ?
Harddrive : SATA 1000G WESTERN DIGITAL BLACK : it seems to me to be a good hard drive.
Drive : DVDRW SATA LG GH22NS50 22X : LG seems a good brand. Is it ? Is there better choice for the same price ? Blu-ray writer are still too expensive for my taste.
Thanks
