My NAT un-opened itself...

Kabob

So, as long as I've had my 360 my NAT has been set to "Open." I've gone through, done the settings, etc.

Well, yesterday I thought that logging in to XBL took longer than usual and while playing MW2 with some friends I was dropped from the party (which never happens). I didn't think much of it, I joined them again and got into a game.

Today it happened again though, when I rejoined the party my buddy mentioned that it sounded like my NAT wasn't open and I knew that was impossible, but sure enough I looked down just slightly and it had been changed to "Moderate." I didn't change any settings, add any devices, etc.

What could have done this? I've tried opening it again with no luck, it's stuck on Moderate.

Any ideas??

Upgrade the router firmware and make sure universal plug and play is enabled. The 360 uses UPnP to open the ports it needs. This solves most all 360 nat problems.

And I miss racing.

I had this issue and I ended up needing to change my MTU. And spidey, my NAT is open, yet my router (ATT Uverse) doesn't support UPnP 🙂

UPnP is enabled, Port Range Forwarding is open for 53, 80, 88, and 3074 (for both TCP and UDP), and I tried changing my MTU size as well (I heard that 1492 was a good size) and it's still a no-go.

What's the latest firmware for the WRT-54G-RG? I'm running 5.00.38

OK, this is weird. I went in and set my MTU to manual and did that, went to the Xbox and manually set up the IP and such, no luck. Rebooted the router, no luck for an hour.

I just went back and reset everything to "automatic" and it's back to open. I want to know what caused it though!!

I'm no networking guru but while I was living in that apt. I kept having quite a few problems. Some of which I know was due to the fact that there where 12+ G networks around me. I did notice that at times the assigned IP address for my gear was shuffling around and the list of port forwarding done by UPnP was messed up looking so I did the following & it seemed to help.

As I remember:
* Turned everything off except pc that I was going to use to change router settings.
* Set MTU as manual at 1500 (Read 1500 for cable / 1492 for DSL)
* Cleared out all UPnP port forwarding listed. (I don't have any manually set port forwarding set)
* Released all IP's that the router had issued through DHCP
* On pc released the IP it had received from router
* Renew IP on pc to get it back
* In router set the pc to a static reservation
* Turn on each device one at a time, setting each as static reservation.

If you have your router set to issue IP addresses through DHCP, then everytime a device asks for an IP address it is given the next available one. By setting the static reservations it has the router always give that same address back to the same device if possible.

I dunno. I had weird issues as well a few weeks ago. Nothing I did changed anything. I'm pretty convinced my ISP was fucking around with QoS or port traffic or something.

It could be as simple as what hopeless pointed out. Router software can be buggy, especially with UPnP. If your IP changes the router may not release the port forwarding it originally setup and ignore the new change.

Instead of static, just use a dhcp reservation. turn off the xbox, reboot the router, wait a minute or two, then power on the xbox. That should clear out any shenanigans.

All I do to fix this is go into the xbox network settings and do an 'xbox live' test connection. Once it's finished the test, it'll reopen the NAT. Works every time...

I just put the 360 in the DMZ. It's not like the 360 is going to catch a worm or anything.

Cant have firewall problems if theres no firewall in front of it.
