My MSI P45 Neo3-FR Review

After my bad run in with the DFI LT P35, I decided to go back to what I knew. My old MSI P35 Neo2-FR treated me well so with the P45 Neo3-FR at newegg for $99 AR, I decided to give it a shot against popular opinion.

Upon arrival, it seems to be the basic no frills motherboard right out of the box. Generic cables, I/O shield, Manual and Driver disks for XP and Vista. (We can trash the vista one! ;))

Layout of the board seems ok, though I did notice upon mounting it in my case that the PCIe slot is a bit lower than usual. This may be an issue for some as it was for me. I had to reorganize my layout to fit everything in since I now had less space under my video card for my MCP655-B water pump. No bigie, I just moved my HDD up and slid the pump under it instead of the vid card.

After assembly, I bled and fed the water loop and fired it up! Went into bios and poked around a bit. Easy layout as opposed to the DFI. This board lends itself to the more simple OC which I prefer. Nothing really out of the ordinary within the bios. Plenty of voltage options for over and under voltages. Pretty much what you need for a simple OC. It also has an "auto OC" option but we know I won't mess with that!

Got the board fired up stock settings with a E8500 (ES) that's on loan for testing. Got everything loaded up in windows and decided it was time to play. First run was 400x9 for 3.6GHz which was pretty much a given.

Now it's time to push it a little but I started to feel let down when I went for 450x9 to get this chip up at 4GHz and it was a no go no matter what voltage I threw at it. I kept upping the core and VTT voltage but no matter what it would hang in windows. For the heck of it, I figured my P35 Neo2-FR did 500fsb easily, lets give this P45 Neo3-FR a shot! Went back into bios and only changed the fsb to 500, left the core volts at 1.41 and the VTT at 1.35 and BAM, right in at 500FSB!

I guess I need to start tweaking and see what all I can get out of this board now! I'm hoping this chip will go north of 500FSB so I can really push the limits of the board and my ram!

Here's the LOOP!
The results so far!!

Nice one. I have always had good experiences with MSI boards- top notch. You didn't mention it but I assume you also have adjusted the MCH voltage for the NB as higher FSB's are inevitably going to put more strain on the NB.

MCH left at auto, never adjusted it on my P35 Neo2-FR so I figured i'd leave it alone here. As I said though, I'll tweak more later. I'm just happy this board got to 500 like my old one did!

One thing I did notice, this board seems to overvolt a bit. I have the bios set at 1.41v core and in CPU-z it shows core at 1.424 unloaded. Perhaps this is their solution to the droop issues the P35 Neo2-FR had.

8x500 for 4GHz. I tried all over the place for 450 and it was a no go. This chip must have a hole at 450 because no matter what multi or voltage, it would not get into windows.

I'm going to go for higher too later. I thin ki'm going to get another drive though as I don't want to corrupt my main one with all this tweaking. Too much data to lose on there.

My first 8400 had a hole so to speak, I had the same thing happen, 9x450 no way, got pissed and changed to 451 and it was fine/ go figure.

I need to find how large the hole is at 450. I know I tried +/- around 450 a bit but don't recall how much. I also plan on going higher too, I'd LOVE to see 4.2+ and something over 500fsb on this chip but i'm not holding my breath. 4.0 @ 500fsb is a treat in itself!

nice chip you got there gill! :p

Get that stable on a quad, and you've exceeded me :p

No idea what the NB temps are. I have a chipset cooler here but it has not been placed in the loop yet. I'm awaiting parts, then I'm gonna mount my D-Tek FuZion and a chipset cooler as well.

4.25GHz on this little E8500 that could so far! I'm trying to see how high I can get it overall, then i'm gonna try max FSB. I'm not sure what will limit me first, the mobo or my ram.

I have a fear that I'm gonna be ram limited. I got PC2-8000 Buffalo Firestix but I don't want to run them too hard for fear of popping them. I've heard rumors that if you get them replaced, the stuff you get in return are not Micron D9 and they don't run nearly as well.

I run them loose now just to be safe. I'm gonna loosen them even further and go for it, I just won't push the voltage above 2.2 or so. Plus I keep a fan on them just to help keep temps down.

I really need to get some good benching ram though. I was eyeballing the OCZ Flex XTC because of the price but I am REALLY not a fan of OCZ.

Yeah OCZ have good products, but I personally like G.Skill.

edit; btw, I put a swiftech mcw-30 block on the NB and the NB came down 9c and the pwm came down 5c... running nice and cool now.

I was kinda surprised how warm the NB and PWM get, actually about the same as my x48's did, tho its in check now. So hows your board doing? Happy with it? Sounds like a winner :)

So far it's been treating me great. It seems to be a little picky with voltages and seems to overvolt a shade but great otherwise.
Has the E8500 to over 4.4G but not stable. Has the FSB over 550 but not stable. I checked my NB sink and it's getting quite warm so I need to get that block on there before I really push it.

Nice :)

I figured out that this board over volts just a tad too, but has just a little bit more vdroop than the x48 did. I run with vdroop enabled so the setup has some breathing room. Got my volts back to where they were, within .02v of where I was before, so I am happy.Surprisingly the NB needs less volts on this p35 than the x48 did at the same clock/timings.

very nice...
i need your help guys
i'm right now run the same board with cpu=q8400 3.64ghz (455x8), ram=4x2gb ddr2 800 cl6, gpu=hd 6950 unlocked(940/410) 1.18v, psu=seasonic x-660 with:
vcore - 1.29v
dram - 2.1v
mch - 1.208v
vtt fsb - 1.4v
ich - auto
all other setting in cell menu on auto.
i realy want to try hit 475 fsb~3.8ghz, any suggestions? what about cpu clock and mch clock? any setting above 455 cause to bsod..
