My mouse mod.

I was bored so I decided to do something just for the heck of it, I noticed my MX518 clicking noise is kinda annoying and loud, so I say to myself there has to be a way to stop that clicking sound so in order to keep my MX518 in mint condition I search through the bowels of my closet and find a PS/2 Ball mice from a LONG time ago to experiment on.

I open it up and notice the mouse button is a black plastic attached to a white plastic attached to the PCB, to the right of the black plastic a little red button is popping out, pressing it makes the clicking noise.

So, the black plastic must be removable I say to myself, due to the size of the ah heck it was impossible to do by hand or with any tools, so I get a metal lime, lime through the right side plastic just a little bit and use a tiny little clamp to pop the black plastic off. It turns out the button is nothing more than a metal making contact with another metal, the red button presses it in such a way it lowers the metal to have the button press effect but its also pops the metal in such a way it creates the clicking sound (sorry for the incredibly vague description and use of terms).

So anyway, I was able to remove the clicking noise entirely by using a metal lime on black plastic to cut off the right side and use a screwdriver to move the metal in such a way the button will still make it contact the metal on the bottom but not make the clicking sound. Well, at first I thought I had effectively damaged the entire button (it was the right button mind you) but then I connect the mouse and voila!, now I have a fully functional mouse with a silent right mouse button, its not completely silent but compared to the other button its like night & day.

Useless experiment but it was fun, and sorry for the terrible use of terms, description and wall o' text, my mind is blocked now and my writing skills suffered as a result.

Here are 3 videos that show the mod but really they don't do justice to the real thing, its much more appreciable in real life, its probably because of my digital camera's poor audio recording quality. Also, some of the sound is me struggling to hold the camera and click the mouse at the same time, these sounds could be confused with clicking, I'm gonna see if I can get a mic to show the difference.

The first one shows the mouse against the screen so you see I just didn't butcher the mouse button. The 2nd one is just more clicking and the 3rd one shows the difference the best but still the left mouse button doesn't sound as annoying on the video as it does in real life.

Anyways, pictures coming soon and if anyone is interested I might post a video of me performing the mod but I wouldn't reccomend doing this to an expensive mouse as its not guaranteed to work and you might end up with a busted button.

red lines show where to apply the metal lime, in picture 4 there is a little red thing circled... do not lose this thing and be extra careful with it

after step 8 you need to use a screwdriver to put the metal on an angle and make the button sink a little but not too much to press the button.
